Robert Twomey Obituary

A History and Science Buff
There were no limits to Robert Twomey's love for history and science. Botany, entomology, viniculture, the Civil War: he was always reading something and loved talking about it. "He retained everything," said his wife, Marie Twomey.

Mr. Twomey, 48, did graduate work in biology in his 20's, but never finished his dissertation and got into finance when he and his wife had the first of their two boys 18 years ago. He worked as a trader on the American Stock Exchange with Ric Harvey, his brother-in-law, at Harvey Young Yurman, and dreamed of retiring to teach in public school. On Sept. 11, he was at a weekly breakfast meeting at Windows on the World.

When he was not reading, he loved to ride his bike from his home in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, to Breezy Point, Queens. He knew a lot about Sheepshead Bay, where his family had lived for more than a century. It was one of the many things he shared with his wife, whom he married when they were both 19. "I'm living in the house my grandparents bought in 1905," Mrs. Twomey said. "Bob's father played in the construction site of this house."

Here in Australia 9/11 is significant and I just seen a documentary on survivors and those who perished and wondered if there was a Twomey on that memorial wall, after visiting NYC in 2016 and paying my respects I know that we are all inter related in some aspects, it´s an Irish surname, usually hailing from County Cork, I as an Aussie only see Americans as brothers and sisters with a different accent, God Bless and God Speed, and we always can connect on Facebook

Living in “Married Housing,” Denise and I were neighbors and close to Bob and Marie while we were grad students at UGA. On trip to NYC during the summer of 1978, Bob helped me get my Olympus OM2, which I used in Guatemala where Denise and I served as Peace Corps volunteers. Bob (and Marie) was simply “good people.” Every 9/11, I think about him. Peace be with you and yours.

Was a smart funny guy who I enjoyed talking to whenever he came to my post to do an order. Proud to call him a friend.

On the first anniversary, I found Robert's name on a CNN memorial page. Then I researched some more and found the name of his colleague who took over his accounts at the firm. I told her that we were likely distant counsins who never knew each other as the Twomeys left Ellis Island and scattered. I told her that this Canadian Twomey with family in the US was thinking of her friend. Nine months later, her husband wrote back saying that she was touched by my note but was too devastated to write back, understandably. He told me of Robert's love of reading on a variety of topics and then sharing his knowledge like a University Professor. This must be a Twomey trait because my dad was a prof and still loves to share what he's been reading. Robert also sounded like my uncles. And, he sounded a bit like me too - I'm curious of so much too. My point finally is that 15 years later, this Canadian stranger with the same last name was thinking of this remarkable man.

Today, in Sarasota Florida, a memorial to commemorate 9/11 was held in the National Cemetery.
It was an amazing memorial reminding us as Americans how blessed we are in this country and how quickly evil can disrupt and hurt our lives individually and as a nation.
The survivors and victims of 9/11 were honored as well as their families.
I had the honor of reading Robert T. Twomey's name during the observance. We prayed for his family. Blessings.

Science, biology yes Bob was a guy who really was into them. But once he had Emeric and Robert, he so loved the role of Dad. He coached Emerics' basketball games and would converse with Robert as though he was a peer. That is where I see the sad sad loss. What a fun sweet guy. I do miss that guy! He really was more like a brother than my sisters husband.

I am always looking for the Twomey name. Most people with the name spelled exactly this way are related. I saw the name and had to read the story. I'm sorry I didn't know Robert - I'm sure he was a fine person. To the Twomey family - If you're ever in South Georgia, please look me up.

I didn't know Robert, but I was doing research on 9/11 and came across his picture. His smile reminds me of my brother Ray Twomey in Richmond Virginia. I, for one, have not forgotten September 11 and never will. God Bless,

This is hopefully going to be read by the family of Mr. Robert Twomey. I participated in the Rolling Requiem on 9/11/02. After reading through numerous names, I chose a badge bearing Robert's name, and wore it while I sang and all day at work. I got to see a picture and read the biography about Robert. I found it interesting that I had passions about some of the same things while I was growing up, and that I do what he had hoped to do when he retired. I teach (art) in a large public school in Pennsylvania. My students asked me whose name was on my badge, and I told them before we talked a bit about the tragedy. I was proud to take part in the Rolling Requiem. I realize that music cannot change what happened. I do feel that performing Mozart's Requiem was a good choice. It has been used so many times and places since its creation to mourn the loss of those who have gone on before us. I recently married, and did so without my father. He died suddenly in March. So our celebration was bittersweet. Yet I thought of the laughs, jokes, and wonderful memories I have of him. He was with me at my wedding and he always will be. Please keep Robert with you. God is watching over him as He watches over you. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy and thank you for letting me 'represent' Robert. Teisha

My name is Pete Giordano and I am 17 years old. I live in Rochester, NY and I go to Gates-Chili High School. We have participated in paying respect to all victims of 9-11. What we did was we printed out the names, ages, and where the victims were and we put them on stickers. We wore them so that everyone in the school was wearing a victim's name. Every single victim was honored. I received Robert's name and I just wanted to wish you the best of luck and just let you know that he was honored and thought of today. Thank you.

I am working on a cross stitch for a memorial flag, for the ones that died on Sept 11th, my name to do was Robert Twomey and I just wanted to know a little about the person, I was doing my memorial on. It seems for what I have read here, he was a very special person, to all.

It would be tough to meet a nicer man than Bob. I don't ever recall seing him at work without a smile on his face or in the midst of a conversation full of laughter. It would be a gross understatement to call him a "Great Guy".

We cry with you in the loss of Robert.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
