Robin Mierke Obituary

Robin Mierke

FREMONT: Robin Mierke, 94, of Fremont, died Saturday morning at Stein Hospice in Sandusky.

She was born January 15, 1918 in Fremont the daughter of John Binkley and Mary Ann Binkley Ulsh. She graduated from Old Fort High School in 1936. She married Eldon Mierke in 1937 and was married to him for over 35 years. She worked at Woolworth's and later at Ulsh's Grocery Store. Robin was truly a woman ahead of her time and accomplished many things in her life. She was the first female pilot in Sandusky County, built and operated Maple Lane Bowling Alley, operated Fremont Dodge, making her one of the first female car dealers in the area. She also built and operated the Rob Inn Restaurant on Pelee Island. She loved singing and playing the ukulele and just genuinely loved people. Robin touched so many people's lives and she will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her cousin, Paul Willer of Massachussetts; longtime friend, Pat Watson of Fresno, CA and Fremont, OH; pet french poodle, Auge; and many loyal and faithful friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Grace and Evelyn (Dymond).

Visitation will be Tuesday, July 24 from 4-7:30PM at Keller-Ochs-Koch-Mason Funeral & Cremation Service, 416 S. Arch St., Fremont. A Celebration of Life service will begin at 7:30PM at the funeral home.

I have many fond memories of Robin, Evie, Del and Eldon - as a child my parents lived next door to Ulsh's Grocery Store on East State Street. Robin and Evie would sit in chairs along the right side of the store in the back and read the Cleveland Plain Dealer - especially interested in the Sam Shepard case of so many years ago. Paul Miner (sic) their stock broker would make his weekly appearance and of course the store closed every Wednesday so Robin and Evie could take their boat to Pelee. Robin was quite a person - I will always fondly remember her.

When we first met Robin 3 years ago on Pelee Island we had a hard time believing that she was 91. She was full of vim and vigor and raring to go in the Canada Day parade. We had great times with Robin on the island and in Florida. Joe would kibitz with her about her policical views and often got her going. We are so happy we were able to spend her last birthday with her in Florida. We will miss her immensely. Pelee and Florida will not be the same without her.

So sorry to hear about Robin. Evie and Bobbie were good friends with our mother, Frances Bliss. They bowled on teams together. Mom even sewed life-preservers for the poodles. What great times we had listening to their boating stories. Our condolences to the family.

Robin was a great friend to my mother (Ruth Meggitt) and I have so many wonderful memories of being around her, Mae and Evelyn while growing up. From playing cards and staying with her after the tornado in the 1970's to many fun times at Pelee Island, to buying my first car from her (Dodge Charger), to spending time with the "boys". I bet there is a great party going on in Heaven with all the friends coming back together. I'm sure my Mama is there to welcome her with open arms!
