Rodney Cleckler Obituary

Rodney Jeff Cleckler, 65, passed away on February 9, 2012 in Woodland Park, CO. Rod was born in Thorsby, AL. He was the child of Kathleen and Jeff Cleckler and he had one sister, Kathy, who preceded him in death. Rod graduated Thorsby High School and attended Montevallo University, studying math and physics. He had a long career in the United States Air Force and then worked as a contractor for The Miter Corporation, before retiring in 2005. Rod is survived by his mother; his two sons, Jay and Jon; his four grandchildren, Addie, Elliot, Josie and Cohen; and his two beloved dogs, Gizmo and Molly. Rod was a spirited man who gave generously to all with whom he came into contact. He was always quick with a joke, reflecting his intellect and sense of humor. He enjoyed cabinetry and electronics. He also had a life-long love of trains and gave narrated tours on the Midland route as a volunteer. Rod loved the Rocky Mountains and you could often find him camping up at timberline with his two dogs. A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 17th at 2pm at The Community Church in Woodland Park with a family celebration of his life this summer. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Teller County Animal Shelter in honor of his love of animals.

I am positive that this is the same Major Cleckler that was the commander of the 779th Radar squadron in Opheim MT. He had 2 sons and one of them was named John. This would have been around 1978 and 1979. My father was a Msgt stationed there during that time. I have wonderful memories of Opheim, even when Major Cleckler kicked me off post because I was caught breaking into an abandoned radar tower with John Quay. Small world I guess, my condolences to all of his loved ones.

Stationed in Air Force with Rod and Joan in San Vito and ran into him in C. Springs from time to time. Sounds like he never changed.

Rod was special. He adopted Molly when we adopted her sister Zolly. He had a love for his pups that knew no bounds. Loved that man.

Rod was a unique guy. Sharp as a tack and he played the contrarian well but he had a heart of gold. I loved having technical arguments with him cause he knew his stuff. I learned a lot from him as a friend and as a coworker.

Keep a smile on your lips,
Peace in your heart,
And love in your eyes...
And if life should hand you nothing but lemons,

Make a batch of lemonade!

Thank you for touching my life and letting me be a part of yours. Never have I met a more gentle and honest soul. You will be forever missed and forever in the hearts of those you touched with your wisdom. Carpe Diem! My dearest friend. Karla burke (Fountain, CO.)

We know that Jay and Heather, Jon and Michelle, and Rod's grandchildren will truly miss him! He was a unique and wise man. It was a privilege to share grandchildren with him. We often will remind the kids how much their "papa Rod" loved them as they grow older. Rest in peace.
