Roger Browne Obituary

ROGER JAMES BROWNE II.
1931
March 5, 2021
Roger James Browne, II, 90, of Colorado Springs, passed peacefully at home from this world into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on March 5, 2021. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Virginia, his children, Suzanne Browne Manthei; Roger James Browne, III; four granddaughters; and a great-grandson. After graduation from West Point in 1954, Roger's Army career included tours in Korea and Viet Nam. At Ft. Bliss, TX, he initiated and organized the training for female soldiers in Air Defense MOS as well as commanded the 3rd ADA Battalion. He was chosen to study the Yom Kippur war in Israel in 1973-74. While at Ft. Bliss, he began officiating football for high school and youth league teams. He attended the NATO Defense College (1975) in Rome, Italy, attended the Army War College (1977), then returned to Europe at SHAPE. At Ft. Leavenworth, he guided the Army toward the complete use of GPS. His final assignment, the Army's liaison Officer to the USAF Space Command, produced the activation of the Army Space Command. Roger and Ginger survived 30 years and 30 moves with the Army.
After retirement, Roger earned his teaching license, then taught math for 5 years in Woodland Park Schools. He continued refereeing football while teaching. When he left teaching, he and Ginger moved to Gleneagle area for proximity to Eisenhower Golf Course. Roger enjoyed playing golf all his life, playing with Ginger, his children, and his grandchildren. He was an instructor in the Jr. Golf program. He and Ginger were active participants in their church, Roger being the Bible storyteller complete with costumes from modern Israel to ancient Judea. It was his passion to share the truth of the Gospel in engaging ways so that others would believe in the hope of eternity. His storytelling including regaling his family with tales of his travels and times as an Army 'brat' and an officer. Family and friends would gather around the table and Roger would proudly announce, "Storytime, storytime!" These tales inspired his listeners with laughter and a deeper appreciation of life's lessons.

Roger was close to my parents and befriended my husband and I as well. He and Ginger said after our wedding that they don't do the "longest married dance" because they always win and want to give other couples the opportunity to win. His kind heart carried his cancer struggle past my own father's cancer battle with sweet visits, laughter, and a shared anticipation of heaven. While we miss he and my dad, they surely are enjoying being in the presence of the Lamb. All our love to Ginger.

Roger was like an uncle to me even though we were not blood related. Enjoyed many good times with him on and off the golf course. A very bright guy to talk with. May he rest in peace, I know God is watching over him.

I met him a couple of times, and sure wish I had met him a lot more. I would have been honored to have been his friend.
