Roger Sandy Obituary

Roger Dale Sandy, 83, passed away peacefully on 2 May 2014 at Village at Skyline with Pikes Peak Hospice. Roger was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, 15 November 1931 to Rachel M. (Slusser) and Donald R. Sandy. He spent his early years on a farm in and around Minden and York, Nebraska. He attended the University of Nebraska and graduated in 1953 with a BS in General Agriculture. Upon graduation as a Distinguished Military Graduate, Roger entered the Army as a Second Lieutenant in the Field Artillery then transferred to Military Intelligence. He is a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam War.

Roger retired from the U.S. Army in 1974 as a Lt Colonel and transitioned into the field of Golf Course Maintenance, working at clubs in San Antonio and Austin, Texas retiring from that occupation in May 1991. From May 1991 to June 1995, he and his wife, Donna May, of 47 years, traveled the United States in a recreational vehicle, visiting 48 states, family and quilt shows. Roger enjoyed RVing, cooking and especially quilting.

In 1995, Roger and Donna settled down in Colorado Springs. They continued to travel in their RV. Roger began quilting in 1986 with his wife Donna. He enjoyed quilting because it gave him a chance to express himself as a creator of something either functional or an art object and it kept him alert both physically and mentally. He was very active in Piecing Partners Quilt to include serving as President of the guild.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents and his wife Donna May (Kuster). He is survived by his daughter Kathryn Cadwallader (Ralph), Debra Turk, Steve Sandy and Shawn Sandy (Chrisie), 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He will be inurned at the new VA Cemetery near Fort Carson when it opens in 2015 with Cappadona Funeral Home handling the arrangements.

Was just thinking of Col Sandy the other day and wondering how he was doing. Well he is now quilting with Donna in heaven I am sure. What a sweet man and neighbor. My heart goes out to the family on his loss.
