Ronald Wisner Obituary

Ronald E. Wisner, adored husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, died riding his mountain bike. Ron led a full and adventurous life. Born in Upper Sandusky, OH, he graduated from Wittenberg University and joined the newly created Peace Corps to teach agricultural practices to farmers in Niger, West Africa. From this experience a lifelong love of world travel and interest in exploring cultures was born. After his return from Africa Ron attended Michigan State, where he met Jane Haven. After a six-month courtship, they married. Ron received his Masters from Michigan State and began his career at UM-Flint as Assistant Dean for Student Services. Ron and Jane welcomed Sara and Mark into the world, and moved their family west for Ron to accept a position at the University of Colorado at Colorado Spring as Dean for Student Life and to enjoy a sport-filled lifestyle. At UCCS, Ron also served posts as Executive Director of Student Affairs and Dean of Students. Concurrently with his academic positions and in between running marathons, skiing Colorado's resorts, and living life to the fullest, Ron achieved his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. A Fulbright Scholar, he was as intelligent as he was lovable. Ron and Jane were exemplary models for retired life. They spent a year teaching in Copenhagen, Denmark, twice travelled around the world as staff of the Semester at Sea program, and embarked on cycling, skiing, and hiking trips with family and friends. Ron was a serial volunteer, giving of his time and talents to the Pikes Peak Marathon, Garden of the Gods running club, US Olympic Committee, Vail Music Festival, Pike's Peak Library, Tri-Lakes Transportation Services for Seniors, and Citizen's Project. He served as a board member of the Karen Possehl Endowment for Non-Traditional Women's Scholarships, the UCCS Chancellor's Leadership Class, the Pikes Peak Area Peace Corps Alumni, and his latest passion, the Kids on Bikes project. Ron never met a dessert or beer he didn't enjoy. Scheduled to the maximum, above all else family came first in his heart and calendar. Memorial service will be held Friday, May 28, 2010 at 10 a.m. at Hillside Gardens and Event Center, 1006 South Institute Street, 80903, 719-520-9463. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Kids on Bikes.

"The Voice" of the Spring 2007 SAS Voyage immediately rang in my head when I read the sad news of Ron's passing. It was amazingly clear and with it countless joyful memories came back to me. I will always smile thinking of Ron and the adventurous spirit that he and Jane shared with so many.

Rest in peace, Ron. Your voice carries on.

What a treat to have crossed paths with Ron's life. We shared countless meals across the world's oceans during Semester at Sea. We were enriched by his passion, joy and enthusiasm. Our lives have been inspired by his zest for life... We cherish special memories - paddling under the falls at Iguazu, Brazil and then back home again with the mini reunion 'gourmet picnic' lovingly prepared by Ron & Jane. What a team!
Jane, our hearts are with you... we cannot even fathom your loss.
Hugs & lots of love always,
Diana & Gary Whitney

A giant has fallen. No one embodied grace, peace, love, and light like Ron Wisner. The world is truly a better place for having his life grace it, and my life is richer for having his spirit inspire it.

Ron was such a great soul on our Semester at Sea, Spring '07 Voyage. He loved to laugh and smile and was always doing just that. He threw his joy into every task at hand (i.e. converting celsius into fahrenheit)and never failed to impress our ship family with his outrageous costumes (see photo). This picture is from our "pre-port" to Japan and as you can see he was happy to share his laughter. He will be greatly missed and I feel honored that I was able to voyage The World with him.

I can still here his voice in my head from Semester At Sea 07 reading off the announcements for the day. It saddens me to think that "The Voice" is no longer there but his memory will live on in our minds everytime we think of that voyage. My condolences to his family, he was an amazing man.

My Dearest Jane and cherished children and wee ones...
Ron was our spinning class hero..not many things could get me up eagerly or anyother way to be ready at 5:30 am...but Ron did! Jane and Jesse wisely slept in till Saturday's class.
He often shared the best stories of all of your times....he had us in stitches with the Christmas tree story...chopping at one level..then the next...tree upstairs ,no downstairs...and up it went...beautifully decorated! CRASH!!!! Jane ...with your encouragement and editorial in "Ron's Words"....he had us in tears laughing, ...simply dragging the tree out one door, decorations and all, to the entryway downstairs while a neighbor or two watched in wonder and he simply said good morning, continuing on with his tree decoration...ok..now in the basement!
His sense of humor, compassion, love of you all, and wonderful stories kept our spinning class cruising through miles...of torture...
Jane ..Jesse and I are you sending you and your wonderful family all our love in this most shockingly painful time.
with love,
Phyllis and Jesse

Ron Wisner was everything--the most friendly, considerate, encouraging and delightful man I knew in my years at UCCS as both a student and employee. I missed meeting him in the hallways or seeing him jogging along Austin Bluffs Pkwy after his retirement. I will remember him fondly for the rest of my life.

Jane
I just heard about Ron's untimely death via Gary Palm. I only had the privilege of once seeing Ron after Wittenberg days but Dee and I have enjoyed immensely your Christmas letters down through the years. I will always remember Ron from our Lambda Chi days. He was the kindest and most compassionate brother one could ever have had. He took me under his wing when I was a Freshman and was always a great support. Our days working together as houseboys at the KD house were a blast. His letters from his year spent in the peace corps were inspiring. May God bless you in the days ahead knowing that Ron was deeply loved by so many and will be greatly missed. ZAX Ron- you blessed so many by your life on earth and now are safely in your Father's arms forever. Jim and Dee Simpson

Dear Jane and family,

I recall once telling Ron that 'when you are Keith's friend you are always Keith's friend'. Now that Ron is no longer with us those sentiments are passed on through the great memories which I hold of Ron to you Jane and of course your family. As a friend if there is anything that I can do to support Ron's family then please do not hesitate to let me know.
As they say in Australia he was an incredible bloke and I am proud to have known him and more proud to have been able to call him my friend.

I miss my dear friend and will always remember him fondly and with the greatest respect.

Dear Jane and family, I had the privilege of volunteering with Ron in Vancouver for 2 weeks for the USOC back in February. One of the jobs that Ron and I had together was sitting on the floor all day sorting through student art work. That was one long day, but Ron got me through it. On April 30, Ron made time to come to Manitou to take me to lunch. I'm so fortunate to have known this fine gentleman and to call him my friend. He will be missed.

I arrived at UCCS in the Fall of 1980 and Ron was one of the first people I came into contact with. He was a very friendly, funny, open guy, and I would see him occasionally in the Pub when my band, The Autono, was playing or in his office. My sincerest sympathies go out to his family at this time. He will be remembered fondly and I feel that his was a life well lived.
