Roy Bone Obituary

Roy Marshall Bone passed away in his sleep August 16, 2011. He is survived by three sisters, his wife Emily, two sons, and two grandchildren. RMB was born July 22, 1925 in a Mississippi River farm house in Southeast Missouri. He served his country as an enlisted bombardier during World War II, where he was a member of the 44th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force. RMB flew 35 missions over Germany on a B-17 named the Flying Dutchman, based out of Mendelsum Air Base in England. He kept up on the history of the 8th Air Force and recently took a commemorative flight on one of the last flying B-17s. RMB had many friends, among them his regulars at the YMCA, where he went almost every day until his final illness. He was known by all sorts of people--people who worked in the bank and the grocery store, the post office and the pharmacy--as a man who always remembered your name and was quick with a friendly greeting. RMB was a real estate developer in Colorado Springs from 1965 until his retirement in 1990. He was an avid golfer and fisherman. He was loved by family, and will be dearly missed.

Emily,
We are very saddened to hear of Roy's passing. The Hillis children have known him all of our lives. He is going to be missed by a lot of people. One of my favorite memories of Roy is when he used to sing and cook bacon/eggs on his big grill at the cabin(s)in Deckers! I can not recall a day where he was not smiling, singing or telling a joke!
Love always,
Sperry

You were a friend to all you crossed, and you forgave all who crossed you. I loved your story about the lead plane having engine problems, and your plane took it's place. All of a sudden you were leading the entire 8th Air Force on a bombing run over Germany. You had a great run Roy and I will miss you and your stories in the steamer at the Y. My sincere condolences to you Emily. John Murphy
