Ruth Ann Steele

June 3, 2021

Beloved musician and conservationist Ruth Ann Steele died peacefully in her home at the age of 95. She was preceded in death by her husband Jim, but members of her extended family and circle of friends from every walk of life will carry her legacy forward. Ruth Ann was affectionately known by many nicknames: Mulch Lady, Black Forest Queen, Bluebird Protector, Noxious Weed Warrior, Musical Genius, and Energizer Bunny. All who loved and admired her absorbed simple lessons about celebrating life and caring for the environment. Memories of the songs she wrote, arranged, directed, and/or skillfully performed on piano fill our hearts with joy. Those who want to honor Ruth Ann are invited to volunteer at the Black Forest Slash Mulch Site or donate to a nature organization or charity.

I am just arranging a song I wrote years ago titled "I Remember You" which was written for you, Mrs. Steele. You remain my favorite and most inspirational teacher through all time.
At Cherry Hills, Mrs. Steele was able to inspire everyone to appreciate music. I also took piano lessons from her and she told me that if I don't like the way a song goes, I should re-write it. Thank you for giving me the freedom to be a composer! Does anyone remember the snake named EGBD? She had me play a lot of Bach and when I played really well, she'd say, that's so beautiful I want you to play it at my funeral. (which scared me a little being an 8 year old) Well, I missed my chance! My dad sang with her in Rotary Club - Mom told me it was FUN watching her bossing all the Rotarians and making them SING! I always miss you and appreciate you. Thank you for being part of my life.
Love, Tay

There´s about 10,000 songs that remind me of this lovely lady. I could not get "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" out of my mind today and was prompted to search the obituaries. I was saddened by this news, but will say Mrs. Steele had an amazingly long and beautiful life.

I was a terrible music student all of my elementary school years, but her enthusiasm for it has given me a lifelong joy and appreciation of music. She was a conservationist before there was such a thing. This, too, rubbed off on me and all of my friends. If there was ever a person who made the world a better place it was this fantastic, amazing, brilliant woman. She was such a role model for all of us and I feel so sad knowing she´s not fighting for the planet... On this side, anyway! Please know how often most of her students think of her and how deeply she affected our lives. What a winner!

Ruth was the definition of "fiesty". She fearless even though she was not very big. The world needs more people of courage like her. I will miss her.
