Dearest Machelle,
I'm done a poor job keeping in touch this past year! We have thought of you so many times - Matthew still talks about Ryan! We have been in the process of selling our house (since Feb) and are building a new home - my pictures are all in storage. When I can finally get to them, I know I have several of Ryan at CHOA, Shop-With-A-Cop, Make-A-Wish store...I will send them as soon as I can! I often think Of Ryan's incredible smile. We were at CHOA a couple of weeks ago for Matthew's 2 month checkup -his pictures still hang on the wall, and his beautiful smile still lights up the room! Ryan will always be remembered - he touched so many lives! Please stay in touch!God's richest blessings to you!
All our love to you and your family,
June & Russ, Matthew, Chris, Alyssa and Bethany

It is hard for me to believe it has been a year since Ryan’s passing. His picture on the third floor continues to be an inspiration to all of us involved in the care of kids. Dad and I wish you all the best in your upcoming exams this spring. We know you will be a huge success!

Ryan made such a huge impact on my life in a short amount of time. His positive attitude and loving spirit touched my heart immediately. I remember one encounter with Ryan fondly as we spoke of god and how he had so many friends that had passed on. I took away from our conversation a feeling of joy and need knowing that I want to have the spiritual trust that Ryan had. What an inspirational spirit Ryan has. I know he continues to carry that on in his new home.

I feel inspired by Ryan and his short life. He touched me the first day he walked into our office for treatment. He was so strong and always so upbeat each time he returned for more radiation. He certainly put the little every day problems into perspective for me. His joy in living his life every day no matter how bad he might feel physically was amazing. Being a mother I am also inspired by the courage displayed by his mother Machelle. Ryan will live through her and through all of us that were touched by him.

MACHELLE, I THINK OF YOU AND YOUR FAMILY OFTEN. AS YOU KNOW, I TOO KNOW WHAT IT IS TO LOSE A SON. ALL OF US AT KOSAIR LOVED RYAN AND HATED TO SEE YOU ALL LEAVE FOR COLORADO. I KNOW THAT THE NURSES HE HAD AFTER KOSAIR CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL LOVED HIM AS MUCH AS WE DID. HE ALWAYS HAD A SMILE AND WAS ALWAYS WORRIED ABOUT HIS MOM AND FAMILY. I AM GLAD DANA AND JILL HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO KNOW AND LOVE HIM EVEN IF HIS CAMP QUALITY EXPERIENCES WERE SHORT LIVED. I THINK OF RED HAIR, FRECKLES, A GREAT SMILE, WRESTLING, AND A BIG HEART WHEN I THINK OF RYAN_ SOUNDS LIKE AN ANGEL TO ME. I HOPE OUR SONS HAVE MET BY NOW, THEY BOTH LOVED THEIR MOMS ALOT. THEY COULD BE GREAT BUDDIES.

I just wanted everyone to know that their now hangs an amazing drawing of Ryan hanging in the hall between the Peds unit and the PICU unit at Memorail Hospital. This picture will remind us daily of the battle that Ryan fought, but moreso....the sweetness and determination that he wore on his sleeve.
The staff here will always remember Ryan...........He is missed greatly.

We will always remember Ryan. He was such a beautiful child. There are some people that we meet in life that just seem so perfect and special. Ryan was one of those people. I remember how much Alexandra enjoyed playing with Kayla and Ryan. I loved to hear the stories of how Ryan would chase the girls around the house and tease them. Ryans laugh was infectious. It was such a joy to hear him laugh...(more of a belly giggle). How lucky we all are to have been able to know him..if only for a moment. I remember him coming to my house a few times because he saw Kayla and Alexandra too far from home. He was very protective of Kayla. It was easy to see how much he loved her. Just as obvious was his love for his mom. A large part of my memories of Ryan are the memories of his mom. Machelle, just as Ryan was a gift to each of us, you were the picture perfect mom for Ryan. You have such a wonderful family and each of you are loved by so many. We are truly blessed to have know each of you. The Lord is holding Ryans hand just as He is holding your hearts in His hands. We dearly miss Ryan and continue to pray for your entire family.

Ry,
I've turned 40 today only to realize that I haven't even lived half as much as you in your short 14 years. All the pain and struggles and your absolute determination has inspired so many. I know for sure that you are where you need to be, looking down upon the rest of us that so truly need you. I know you were looking down upon Kayla and Gina on January 19,2006, thank you. I know we can all count on our little red-headed angel to pull us thru the tuff times. Thank God we have you.

I wanted to share a speech written by Ryan's Oncologist, Dr. Stephen Palmer. This speech was given at Ryan's Memorial service.
Ryan Thomas - 1/5/06 - By Stephen Palmer, M.D.
We met for the first time on July 28, 2003. This meeting began a nearly 2 1/2 year journey and relationship with Ryan that was truly unique, for Ryan was truly one of a kind.
Never could any of our team who cared for Ryan ever know that day, what we were in for - lots of challenges, ups and downs, joy and laughter, and of course, some sadness and bad news.
If asked to describe one of Ryan's greatest attributes, it would be difficult to choose - there were so many - but the one I was most inspired by was his determination.
Ryan had an incredible understanding of the value of each day of life. Ryan was determined to hold onto his life no matter what the challanges.
What kind of challenges did Ryan face? Well, before I met Ryan, he had conquered Leukemia, as a young boy. How can I explain the determination of someone who went through 251 visits to our clinic, in 29 months, for therapy and followup, and too many to count other appointments for testing, surgeries, and radiation therapy. Ryan was so determined to live every day of life, not out of fear of death, but because of how precious his life was.
Ryan was the only patient of mine, in 16 years as an Oncologist, who would get anxious and worried to the point of being ill when there was bad news about his cancer. Not because of the news of relapse, but because he thought I might recommend stopping treatment. Ryan was determined to live.
Ryan was determined not only to face the challenge of his cancer but he was determined (his family might say stubborn) to do it with a smile and grin that showed his caring and love. Ryan made it easy for me and others to care for him.
Ryan is a great inspiration to me and I'm sure to many others. May he rest in peace having fought a valiant fight for his life and with a determined love for his family and friends.
Carmen Cooksley

Ryan will always be a bright and shining star in our hearts. He touched so many lives with his determination to live his life with as much spunk as a kid could and always had a smile no matter what he had to face. He is definitely one of God's precious angels and when the wind blows I know I feel the warmth of his memory. We didn't have the opportunity to get to know Ryan as well as most of the people whose lives he touched, but he was a blessing to us from the first moment we met him. We were there at his baptism and presented him with a beautiful poem that a friend wrote about him from WV that we went to church with.
Our prayers are with you and may God continue to give you strength and wisdom for the coming days ahead.
Sincerely,
Carmen and Gregory Cooksley

Mrs. Crow,
To many people Ryan made a difference. We all learned a lot from Ryan. I know you are very proud of his determination to fight his illness. Knowing the type of child he was I'm sure he is smiling down on you, thankful for such a loving family. I know God will provide you with comfort and love. I wish all of us from Ft. Knox could have been there for you and your family during this difficult time. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Well I remember my wife coming home from school telling me about this little red head that reminded her of our son. Well, it didn’t take long before I met him. We finely met Ryan, and his family and fell in love at that point on. After a few visits Ryan said, he wanted to go to church with us. We took him and Kayla to church for awhile then Ryan got sick again. When Ryan got back from the hospital he wanted to be baptized, so I dropped everything and took him to the church and baptized him.
After he felt the way that he did he told his Mom, you have to be baptized to make things right with God. So at that point we baptized her. That was happiest little boy that I have ever seen. If I ever had two more children I would want them to be just like Ryan and Kayla. God bless you all in this time of need.

I remember the first day of kindergarten the little redheaded boy with a big smile walking through the door. He reminded me of my own redheaded son. I knew then, we were going to have a warm bond between us throughout the year. Ryan was a good listener, but did just what he wanted to do. And with his charm and smile; made you think it was the right way. Even after he left Kindergarten we remand friends. Kayla came to kindergarten next, with the same smile.
My husband & I became like grandparents to Ryan & Kayla. We took great interest in Ryan and his illness with support through friendship and spiritually up lift . Our friendship resulted with Ryan & family getting involved in our church. I know personally that our heavenly father met this little red headed boy and shinning smile with open arms. May God shower down peace and comfort on Ryan’s family in this time of sorrow.

Ryan's smile would warm the hearts of those he gave it away to. He displayed so much courage and kindness while he was here at Pierce School. I always enjoyed seeing him coming down the hallway. He had a smile and greeting to give away to all those he met. He brightened our days at Pierce. I know he will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.
May our heavenly father surround you and your family with a sense of peace and serenity. I know his first grade teacher had a big hug waiting for him in heaven.

Although I never had the pleasure of meeting Ryan in person, I feel as though I've know him all my life. I too am a close friend of his Great-Aunt April. I have heard of all the good and bad times for the past 8 years. When Ryan had good days I was elated, and when he had bad days I felt as bad if he were my own. He was the strongest person that I've ever heard about, and I feel like I've learned through Ryan what true strength really is. I would like to have met Ryan, but I still feel a really close bond with him.

I did not know Ryan personally but I have followed and heard about Ryan for the last 7 years or so. I am a very close friend of his Great-Aunt April and she has kept me updated on her family over the years. Ryan was a courageous and brave young man. He had endured more pain than most individuals in a lifetime. He is going to be missed but he has shown so many of us what strength, courage, and love is all about. My prayers and sympathy to Ryan's family.

I never knew Ryan as a Best friend but he was really cool!! And no matter what he ALWAYS had a sile on his face and was always happy. When people heard he had cancer they never believed it. Everyone always said he was such a happy boy that there was no way he could have cancer. I remember him being in my history class in 8th grade!! He was the funniest person there...he was always making people cheery and full of laughter!! And even though I didnt know him all that well, I had cried when I heard the news! Im soo soo soo sorry that you had to lose such a wonderful son!! I know he'll be missed by all that knew of him!! Condolences to Ryan and his Family and friends!! Being Ryan's great-aunt, I've had the pleasure of knowing him since he was just a few days old. Ryan has been an inspiration to everyone in our family---thinking of everything he's been though has helped me make it through many of my own trials, which by comparison seemed very insignificant. Ryan was our first redhead in the family since me--a wait of 31 years! I picutre him now with his great-grandfather who passed away 5 years before he was born. In many ways Ryan reminded me of my Dad...always smiling and ready for mischief. I'm sure they're both smiling down on the family now and will be waiting for us to join them.

I met Ryan when he was in Mr. Cox's third grade class at Pierce Elem. and then I had the pleasure of being Ryan's fourth grade teacher. I remember taking him to a couple of football games and how he insisted that I come by his house to see all of the beautiful Christmas decorations his mom had up. The thing I remember the most is Ryan's love for life, incredible courage, and his great smile that always seemed to get him out of trouble. I am thankful that I am one of the lives that he touched; he was a true blessing! I also pray that God will comfort and support the family as Jesus lives through each of their friends who are there to support them during these difficult times.

It is hard to believe that it was 3 years ago that we met you at "Shop with a Cop". What a great experience that was for us to meet such a loving family, and to give us something to look forward to every year. Ryan was such a blessing to meet and we will never forget him or his smile. I will never forget when Dylan took a kleenix to blow his nose, Ryan thought it was so funny that such a little guy knew how to do that his smile and laughter was radiated. Ryan truly is an inspiration to all of us and we should all be so lucky to have the courage he did to stand against his cancer and fight so hard. He never gave up! We will never forget him or his family. May God give you the strength to make it through this time of sorrow.

These were the words we'd often hear from our little Matthew when he would find out Ryan was at CHOA at the same time we were. Ryan always had a hug and a smile for Matthew. Our other 3 kids always commented on Ryan's beautiful smile as he pushed his IV pole around to say hello to everyone, sporting his big cross around his neck. He impacted all who knew him. Danny and Machele, what a wonderful job you did raising such a godly, giving young man. Someday there will be a great reunion in Heaven, with Ryan, Jen, Jimmy, Dalton, Milo - and all the rest of us! What a day that will be!! We love you so much!

Danny,Machelle, and Kayla,
Koby and I want you to know how very blessed and special we feel that Ryan and all of you came into our lives. Ryan was such a special young man and an inspiration to all that knew him. I'll never forget the first day he came into the clinic, such a ray of sunshine and an incredible magnetic personality. We will miss him so much but I know that he and Gary and my Dad are all in a much better place. We love you all and know that you are in our thoughts and prayers daily.
