Sally McIntosh Ziegler passed on to everlasting life on September 10, 2021 at her home in Colorado Springs at the age of 85. Sally was born December 16, 1935 in Savannah, Georgia to Sally Nash and Olin Talley McIntosh, Jr.. She grew up on Isle of Hope, and described her childhood as idyllic. As the oldest of 23 cousins, those early days nurtured Sally's love of children and the education and leadership of younger generations and families. She graduated from Pape School, Ashley Hall, and Duke University. At Duke, Sally became the first female editor of the Duke Chronicle. There, she met Edward "Ted" Ziegler, and they married two weeks after she graduated from Duke in 1956. Despite the unlikely match between Southerner and "Yankee," their 63-year marriage was by all accounts an admirable success.
Upon graduation from Duke, and after a short time in Greenwich Village, she and Ted settled in Ossining, New York, where they raised three children and set down deep roots. Sally volunteered at The Ossining Children's Center, then became the Director there for ten years. She was recently named an Honorary Director of the newly built Ossining Children's Center. She took the position of Executive Director of the Childcare Council of Westchester working tirelessly with major corporations to create quality childcare on-site for their employees. In 1994, Sally was ordained a Deacon in the Episcopal Church. She attended All Saints' Church in Briarcliff and assisted with Deacon duties there. She and Ted lived in Ossining until they retired together to Colorado Springs in 1997.
During her time in Colorado Springs, Sally was a long-time member and 'champion' of Grace and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Fr Jeremiah Williamson expressed that "Deacon Sally was special in a way that words could never truly capture and she is already missed. I treasured her wisdom, sense of humor, and frankness." Sally taught at St. Stephen's' Episcopal Day School as well as sharing her wisdom with the congregation in lively sermons. She ministered to the sick and elderly bringing Holy Communion and a sense of hope to folks all over El Paso County.
Simultaneously, Sally volunteered to become an advocate for children through CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of the Pikes Peak region. She cared for the young children like an extended family and supported many families facing huge challenges. Her impact on children extends over generations and she had pictures of all of her 'CASA kids' displayed in her office.
Deacon Sally performed countless marriages, baptisms and funerals, guiding many through the transitions of illness and death. Her bold faith and humble spirit comforted us all beyond measure, while her opinionated wit kept us laughing. Her unwavering assurance of the promise of eternal life remains to soothe the many hearts grieving her loss.
Sally is survived by her children, Andrew (Wanda), Matthew (Liz), and Sally W. (Tony); grandchildren Racquel, Lachlan, Owen (Lea), and Daniel; and great-grandchild Josephine, whom she recently baptized. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Nash and Olin III, and husband Edward. She would remind us all to, "go forth into the world to love and serve the Lord!"
There will be a service for Sally on Sunday, October 10 at 1:00pm in the memorial garden at Grace & St. Stephen's Church. Sally and Ted will then be laid to rest together there.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Sally M Ziegler Outreach Fund at
