Salvatore Fiorillo Obituary

Salvatore Fiorillo Jr. of Colorado Springs, passed away on March 15, 2014. He was born to Salvatore Sr. and Virginia Fiorillo on April 10, 1934, in New Haven, Connecticut. After high school he enlisted in the United States Air Force in April 1952. On April 12, 1957, he married the love of his life, Rosemarie (Lanzoni), sharing nearly 54 happy and memorable years until her death in January 2011.

Sal had a distinguished and highly successful Air Force career serving for 24 years, retiring at the rank of Chief Master Sergeant in November 1975. Sal's Air Force Service included tours in: Misawa, Japan; Goose Bay, Labrador; Madrid, Spain; Johnston Island; and the Philippines. During his tour in the Philippines in 1969 and 1970, he travelled extensively between the Philippines, Thailand, Taiwan and Viet Nam. His stateside tours included: Biloxi, Mississippi; Cape Cod, Massachusetts; Omaha, Nebraska; Riverside, California; ENT Air Force Base and Cheyenne Mountain Complex in Colorado Springs. Following his retirement from the Air Force, Sal worked for FORD Aerospace and Communications Corporation as a senior software engineer from 1976 to 1980. He then worked for the MITRE Corporation from 1980 through January 1993, starting as a member of the technical staff and retiring as a group and project leader.

Sal's favorite hobby was flying. He obtained a commercial pilots license for single and multi-engine aircraft. He also became a certified FAA flight instructor. Sal and Rosemarie became avid RV'ers, touring the country in their 40 foot motorhome, spending winters in Arizona, New Mexico and Florida.

Sal was preceded in death by his parents: Salvatore Sr. and Virginia Fiorillo; brothers: John, James, Thomas, and Joseph; sister: Mary; his beloved wife Rosemarie; and daughter-in-law Kathleen (Salvatore III). He is survived by his brothers: Anthony, William and Richard; sons: Kenneth (Karen and daughters Vanna and Deidre-grandchildren Brandon, Emily, Natalie, Joseph and Dominic) and Salvatore III; daughter: Cindy (Thomas and his daughter Tyler); grandchildren: Anthony, Kyle, and Heather; and great-granddaughters: Lillian and Aliyah.

Sal's life touched many and he will be greatly missed. We, his children, know that our "Dad" would like to thank all those who cared for him while he was sick and dying, as well as all who helped throughout this difficult time.

Memorial Services will be held Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Shrine of Remembrance "America the Beautiful" Chapel, 1730 E. Fountain Boulevard, Colorado Springs, CO. A private inurnment will take place at the Shrine of Remembrance Chapel Mausoleum.

Lori says it so very well. I echo her beautiful words. MITRE has the best second-family folks there are. Sal set the highest standard for "nice" folks. He made my world a better place just for having known him and his beautiful wife. I know Heaven will be enriched by them and I look forward to seeing them again in the great hereafter.

Sal was one of the sweetest nicest men I ever had the privilege of working with. He was always positive and friendly. He had the greatest smile and just lit up a room when he walked in. He will surely be missed. My prayers are with his family.
