Samantha Lavengood Obituary

Samantha Rae Lavengood, age 38, a resident of Colorado Springs for 14 years, passed away on Thursday, October 4, 2012 at a local hospital as the result of a motorcycle accident. She was a special education teacher for Widefield School District 3, a loving daughter, mother, sister and friend. Sam was born on September 11, 1974 at Fort Carson, Colorado to Mark A. and Dolores D. (Sheffield) Lavengood. She attended the Bangs High School in Bangs, Texas and Western Texas College. She was a person who enjoyed life (especially with her children), her vocation, her co-workers, and the outdoors of Colorado. She very much enjoyed being with her friends and never met a stranger. She will be best remembered for her love of coffee, her spunkiness, her rebellious and stubborn nature, and especially her beautiful smile. She is survived by her four sons: Justin Hogue, PVI Stetson Hogue (United States Army), Austin Hogue, and Trace Lavengood, all of the Colorado Springs area. She is also survived by her mother Dolores "Lori" (husband Bill) Powell of Eastland, Texas; her two brothers: Dwayne (wife Amanda) Lavengood of Security, Colorado, and Travis Woodley of Centerville, Texas; her maternal grandmother, Inge Sheffield of Fountain, Colorado; her step-brothers: Rodney Powell of Round Rock, Texas, and Billy Powell of Groesbeck, Texas; her step-sister, Glynnis Adams of Jacksonville, North Carolina; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins, and her first grandson due in February. Her family loved her so much and was so proud of her. Family gatherings will never be the same. She was preceded in death by her father, Mark A. Lavengood in 2006, and her grandfather Kenneth E. Sheffield in 2008. A celebration of her life will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 11, 2012 at the Rocky Mountain Calvary Chapel, 4285 North Academy Boulevard, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80918. A reception will follow the celebration in the fellowship hall. Memorials may be made in Sam's memory to the Samantha Lavengood Memorial Fund in care of the family. She will be dearly missed. I only knew Miss Samantha for a brief period. She was a quiet worker, with a shy smile, and had a way of making you feel welcome, with her warm hospitality. Almost every time I saw Samantha, she had one or more of her sons with her. Samantha so adored her children. Rest now, precious child of God.

Although I hadn't met her myself, I know several people who knew Samantha and thought the world of her. I know that the children she worked with loved her dearly, and that is the greatest legacy that anyone could leave. I know from talking with my friends that she will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and all that knew her.
