Samuel Brown Obituary

Dr. Samuel Hoy Brown IV passed away on February 7, 2010. Dr. Brown practiced medicine in Colorado Springs, specializing in Ophthalmology, from 1946 until his retirement on May 15, 1991. He was a member of the staffs of Penrose, St. Francis and Memorial Hospitals. Dr. Brown was born May 15, 1916 to Samuel Hoy Brown, III and Ethel (Hawkinson) Brown in Fayette, Missouri. He graduated from Fayette High School, Central College (now known as Central Methodist University) in 1937, and received his medical degree from Jefferson Medial College (now Thomas Jefferson University) in Philadelphia in 1941. He took his internship at Kansas City General Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. He volunteered for the service during World War II and served with the 96th Infantry Division. They made the initial landings on Okinawa and Leyte and were on the way to Japan when peace was declared. He was awarded the Bronze Star, American Defense World War II victory, Asiatic-Pacific campaign, and Philippine Liberation medals and the Combat Medical Badge. After his return from the Pacific, Dr. Brown took post-graduate work in Ophthalmology in Boston and began practice in Colorado Springs in 1946. Dr. Brown belonged to the El Paso County Medical Society, the Colorado Medical Society and the American Medical Society. He was on the State Board of Medical Examiners for twelve years and served as both President and Secretary. He was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Fraternity and Alpha Epsilon Delta and Phi Alpha Sigma Medical fraternities. He served on the Board of Brockhurst Boys Ranch and was President of The Rotary Club of Downtown Colorado Springs. He was a member of the El Paso Club, the Garden of the Gods Club and Broadmoor Golf Club. He belonged to the Episcopal Church and served on the vestries of both Grace and St. Stephens Episcopal Church and the Chapel of Our Saviour Episcopal Church. After retirement, Dr. Brown volunteered with Peak Vista Community Health Centers for several years and was instrumental in establishing an ophthalmology care clinic. He was married June 12, 1941 to Caroline Stewart Morrison, who survives. Other survivors are four sons: Samuel Hoy Brown, V, of Ranson, West Virginia; Stewart Morrison Brown and his wife Barbara, of Littleton, Colorado; Charles Thomas Brown and his wife Denise, of Colorado Springs; and Alfred Morrison Brown and his wife Sally, of Phoenix, Arizona; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Services will be held at Grace and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 601 North Tejon Street, Colorado Springs, CO, on Thursday, February 11, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Dr. Samuel H. Brown to The Rotary Foundation (Tax ID #36-3245072), The Rotary Club of Colorado Springs, PO Box 1558, Colorado Springs, CO 80901, or in memory of Dr. Samuel H. Brown, Second Sight Program, to Peak Vista Community Health Centers, 340 Printers Parkway, Colorado Springs, CO 80910.
