Samuel Colt Obituary

November 4, 1923 - June 10, 2008. Sam Colt was a third generation Colorado Springs native. He graduated from Main High (Palmer) and later attended the University of California Berkeley and Colorado College, where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. He enlisted in the U. S. Merchant Marine at the beginning of WWII, and was a member of the National Guard. He met the love of his life, Elaine, while they were both working at Braniff Airlines in Colorado Springs after the war. Sam was one of the first members of the Pike's Peak Adaman Club, making several ascents of the Peak since the 1950s to set off the traditional New Year's Eve fireworks display. He and his brother Ed owned Colt's Corner and Barthel's restaurants and later the original Guiseppe's Restaurant on Cascade Avenue, which spawned other restaurants in four Colorado cities, including the current Giuseppe's Old Depot. He is survived by wife Elaine, brother Edward, sons Shawn and Timothy, and grandchildren Shannon and Ryan Colt. A private memorial is scheduled for the family.

Sam, to a lot of people in the 60's was Giuseppe's. He always had a good word for everyone that came in, from customer to employees. I learned a lot about restaurant from that man, he made it a passion for me. (Inside humor; don't park behind Sam's car, and don't hurt the grandfather clock)

My dad, Bernie Carter, used to talk about Sam many years ago before he was killed in the police helicopter crash in 1975. He thought so much of him and I still remember this after 33 years. My condolences to his family.

Mr. Colt's greetings at Giuseppe's always made one feel as though he really appreciated your business. Though I did not know him personally I did want to send my condolances to the entire Colt family. I was a classmate at Broadmoor Elementry with Mr. Colt's nephew Eddie. My prayers are with all of you.

Condolences to the family from a fellow fisherman and outdoorsman. I remember lots of fishing trips to "the lake" in Buena Vista with my dad and had met Sam at a young age.

Sam was a wonderful man, and a true mentor to me when I worked at Giuseppe's and then when I managed Giuseppe's East. I will always connect Sam with the fond memories of my youth.

I would like to thank Sam for the 25 plus years of kindness and welcoming he gave to me and my family and friends up at Buena Vista and Pikes Peak. I enjoyed the stories he and my Dad would share with me as we would "cast a line" at the two lakes. Afternoons of fishing at Sams were always an honor and treat for me. Thank you Sam!!!!!

Sam was an icon of our youth. He will forever hold a place in our memories of the coming of age time when we were establishing ourselves. He touched our lives at a time of special vulnerabilitly. He served as a shining example of a fine, responsible, respectable man. To me, he represented what was best in our community. I replay his greeting and smile every time I think of entering old Giuseppe's. His stance and bearing were what I have always carried as the epitome of grace and style. I have always smiled whenever I heard or saw his name mentioned. Since I did not know him personally I can not miss him; for me, he is not gone, he will live forever warmly in my memory.

A visit to Guiseppe's used to always mean a greeting from Sam. He knew most of his regulars by name. That made it special somehow. He was a great gentleman and that restaurant will always have his stamp on it.

Sam was an inspiration to me as a youngster as one of the "hot dogger crew" at G's in the 60's. Work ethic, loyalty and friendship were valuable lessons that he and Ed and Pepper and Sam M. instilled in us. Rest in piece Sam.
