SAMUEL HUNTER Obituary

OBITUARY

SAMUEL C. HUNTER, JR.

Samuel C. Hunter, Jr. passed away on December 26, 2013 at the age of 94. He was born in Crockett, Texas, to Samuel C. Hunter, Sr., and Elmira Jane (Wheeler) Hunter who preceded him in death along with his sister, Barbara Jane (Hunter) Mendes. He graduated from Colorado Springs High School in 1936 and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration in 1940 from West Virginia State College. He continued his education, graduating the next year from the Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Chicago, Illinois.

Sam served his country during World War II in the US Army Air Force. He graduated in the class of 44-J as a 2nd Lt. B-25 pilot and cadet captain of his class. He separated from the United States Army Air Force in November 1945 with a commercial pilot license and was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force Reserve as a Captain in September, 1959. He is a DOTA (Documented Original Tuskegee Airman) and a recipient, with other DOTAs, of the Congressional Gold Medal, awarded in 2007.

Sam assisted his father and then directed the operation of Hunter Mortuary and later was a funeral director affiliated with Evergreen Funeral Home. He was also the first black real estate broker in Colorado Springs, operating Hunter & Company Real Estate firm until 2000. He pioneered multi-family housing for minorities by developing the Payne Chapel Housing program and was chairman of the board when Prince Hall Housing was implemented.

Being active in business, civic and fraternal activities, Sam received numerous awards, acknowledgements and citations. Among them were the Colorado College Diversity Award as an advocate for equality in housing and contributions to the community, business, education and civic activities of Colorado Springs and the NAACP Living Legends Award for Civil Rights Activism in the Colorado Springs community.

Sam was a past member of several organizations, including the original Head Start Board, the Colorado Springs Park & Recreation Board, the Golf Commission and the Board of Directors of the Colorado Springs Board of REALTORS. He is past president and life member of the local NAACP, past president of the local Urban League, and a former member of the Colorado Springs Urban Renewal Authority. He tutored in the reading programs for elementary school students.

He was a Past Most Worshipful Grand Master of Prince Hall Masons, Jurisdiction of Colorado & Utah; an Active 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason and Deputy for Colorado & Utah in the Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, Prince Hall Affiliated, Northern Jurisdiction, U.S.A. Inc.; a Noble of the Mystic Shrine, an Elk and a charter member of the Xi Pi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He was a lifetime member and Trustee Emeritus of Payne Chapel A.M.E. Church.

Sam was an endeared family man and friend. He had lifelong friends from college and was an avid golfer, playing well into his 80's with his golf buddies. He was an example to his children and grandchildren of how to live life in the moment while also anticipating the future. "Do your best so you can be all you can be" were his last words of advice. He was supportive, forgiving, loving and always present. He is still here with us in our hearts. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 63 years, Minnie Ray; children Jocelyn Bailey (Edward), Samuel C. Hunter, III, Carol Hunter; grandchildren Keisha Bailey and Kory Bailey (Megan); great grandchildren Alexander, Hunter, and Samuel Bailey; cousins David and Reginald Washington and their families; and close family friends Sidney Darden and Val Thomas.

Visitation will be at Shove Memorial Chapel on Thursday, January 2, 2014, from 4:00 - 7:00 pm, with Fraternal Services beginning at 5:30 pm.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, January 3, 2014, at Shove Memorial Chapel on the campus of Colorado College, 1010 N. Nevada Ave., Colorado Springs. January 4, 2014

We met Mr. Hunter back in the 50's when my husband and I were stationed at Fort Carson and in search of a place to live. Mr. Hunter was instrumental in getting us in touch with a builder that would help us. Then when my husband, the late MSG Joseph C. Meadows passed away in 2011, Mr. Hunter came in off his retirement to Evergreen Funeral Home to help with his arrangements. He was also very kind in escorting us to my husband's final resting place at Fort Logan Cemetery. What a nice, kind man Mr. Hunter was and it was a pleasure to have known him. Offering our deepest sympathy and condolences to his dear wife and his family. He will be truly missed.

Mr. hunter was a wonderful kind man, he done so much for my family. My mother always told us if she ever met death ,make sure Mr. Hunter took care of her. When my mom Ruth LaCour passed away in 2009 Mr. Hunter came to the funeral home to help us with everything we needed. I asked him why he came on his retirement to help, and he said "I sold your parents their first home, we go way way back and that's what friends do." To the family I say thank you all for sharing this wonderful being with so many, and to Mr. Hunter, thank you so much for being a true friend to my mother may you rest in paradise for your work here is done. May god Bless the family of Mr. Hunter

Minnie Ray and the rest of Sam's family I say GOD BLESS! I meet Sam in 2005 when I got my 33rd Degree, and was impressed with this gentle man that had so many accomplishments and just seemed to be so nice. Later in 2007 I was appointed Overseer for the Orient of Iowa and later Deputy and at all the meetings it was a nice time for me to see Sam and say hello to this Great man. over the years it has been a blessing to me to be around and learn from Sam by just watching him and the short talks we had. I was looking forward to our January meeting to say HI, but now I say BY to Sam.

Mr. Hunter was a kind and gentle soul. He always had an upbeat and positive attitude and was so kind and caring to us in our family's time of need in 1992 and again in 2008 after our parents' passing. As lifelong friends of the Hunter family, we share in your grief and pray that you will be comforted by the knowledge that the community has been enriched because of Mr. Hunter's commitment to make it a better place to live, learn and work.

As we lose people of his generation, I become more and more aware that we walked with giants. Mr. Hunter was one to those of us who were fortunate to know him. RIP, friend.

A great man will be missed, I wish his family and friends condolences in this sad time. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Hunter back in 1998, and the mere fact that I was in the same room as a original Tuskegee Airman gave me goose bumps. The fact that in 98 this man was a living legend made me so proud to have the opportunity to be in his presence! This great man was a very important key in my Journey to get to OMEGA (I remember the sessions) and I will Cherish that opportunity for the rest of my life. I can only hope to achieve a small portion of what he has accomplished, but trust an note that he birthed a feeling of "I can achieve anything I put my mind to" will forever be ingrained in me and passed down thru my family! Bro Hunter you will be missed but never ever forgotten! Sturdy Trees Live Forever!

It was a privilege and a pleasure to work with Mr. Hunter at the Evergreen Funeral Home. The respect that he showed to and received from the families that he served was inspirational to the entire staff.
Mr. Hunter was blessed with a devoted wife and partner. They were a compliment to each other in their life's endeavors.
The City of Colorado Springs has lost one of its finest and most humble citizens who contributed so much to the community.

Genuinely, a People Person

I met Sam a little over a year ago at Evergreen Funeral Home. He would occasionally come in to see the staff and the place where he used to serve as Funeral Director. Sam was the type of person you felt like you knew for years. He would take a genuine interest in others. Just three weeks ago, Sam called Evergreen and I answered the phone. We talked for awhile, and though his health was rapidly declining, he was still friendly, caring and upbeat. Sam leaves an amazing legacy in our military, the funeral & real estate business and as a genuine friend. Occasionally when I officiate or assist with funerals, people will approach me and say, "Do you know Sam Hunter?" Until we see you again, Sam, we will always treasure your friendship and contribution here on earth. God bless you! -Rev. Steve Koeppen / Evergreen Funeral Home Staff
