Sara Hauptman Obituary

Sara, a survivor of the Holocaust, was preceded in death by her husband, Nathan, and daughter, Monique. She is survived by her son, Guy (wife, Margie); her brothers: Jack and Bernard; her sisters: Esther and Mariette; her grandchildren: Simeon, Esther and Jacob; as well as eight great-grandchildren.

Throughout her adult life Sara was out-spoken, whether it was fighting the Nazis in the Belgian underground, as a prisoner of Auschwitz, or as a wife, mother, sister, grandmother or great-grandmother. Sara was a liaison between General Eisenhower and the Allied liberators and concentration camp survivors. After WWII, Sara immigrated to the US, first to El Paso, Texas, then moving to Colorado Springs, Colorado, ultimately returning to El Paso, to spend the final years of her life.

Sara enjoyed cooking, baking, fishing, needle point and gossiping with her friends on the porch in the evening. She loved listening to the Rabbi, and being an active member of the Jewish community. Over her life she inherited many people who would call her "Mom." Her ability to connect with people will only be outlived by the memories of those to whom she touched.

Later in life, Sara became a source of inspiration for thousands as she began to recount her story. Whether it was told in classrooms, lecture halls, televised broadcasts or private individual conversations, she made sure that we would never forget. The same can be said about Sara, for every life she touched, for every story ever told, for anyone who reads her book; she, Sara Hauptman, will never be forgotten.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at Shrine of Remembrance "America the Beautiful" Chapel. Sara will be laid to rest, following the services, at Sons of Israel Cemetery, Colorado Springs, Colorado.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the El Paso Holocaust Museum in her honor.

Sara is gone and leaves behind another first-person account of the holocaust. I am privileged to have met her.
Thank you Sara, for generously sharing your life story because in your words "If I don't, who else is going to do it" . By dedicating your remaining years to serving as a witness you have made a difference.

Precious, precious Sara...you will be so dearly missed! I am so honored that Sara touched my life. My Mom, also a Sara, was her next door neighbor. I lived in OH and visited often. I always knew that my Mom was safe because Sara kept an eye out for her. I got to know her during my many visits with my Mom. She was a unique, generous, and beautiful person. My Mom has been gone for 8 years now, but I still came to El Paso and would see Sara frequently. The world was a better place with her in it. Rest in peace, my Dear.

Sara and her husband Nathan, were good customers of mine when I worked in the Deli at Safeway at the Bonn Shopping Center. She was so much fun to have around. I am so sorry for your loss. May God comfort you at this time.
