Serena Schaefer Obituary

Serena Amanda (Oanes) Schaefer died December 12, 2008 in Colorado Springs, CO. She was born September 3rd, 1913 in Truman, MN to Josephine and Ingebret Oanes. She was baptized, confirmed and married in Waverly Lutheran Church in Trimont, MN. She graduated from Trimont High School in 1932. She married Marvin Schaefer June 28th, 1936. They farmed near Montevideo, MN and later near Sherburn, MN. They moved to Monument, CO in 1953 and to Colorado Springs in 1971. She was an active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, involved with Dorcas, L.W.M.L., Lydia Circle, Good Shepherd Sewing Group, and Bible classes. Serena worked for J.C. Penny Co. in Colorado Springs for 21 years. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a marvelous example of a Godly woman and had a zest for life that was shown in her love of travel and square dancing. With a quick, lovely smile she could light up the room with joy. She will be greatly missed. She's survived by sister, Selma Schmaedeka, Maynard, MN; sons: David M. Schaefer, Colorado Springs, Don Schaefer, Ft. Collins, CO; daughters: Delores Younger and Darlene Hiatt (Dale) of Colorado Springs, Diane Gilmore (Phil), Ft. Collins, CO, Deborah Bornzin (Gary), Bellingham, WA; grandchildren: Carrie (Dean) Schmer, Rex (Gina) Younger, Wendy (Scott) Larsen, Libby (Boyd) Bailey, Brad (Wende) Younger, Henry (Claudia) Hiatt, Eric (Emily) Hiatt, Amy Hiatt, Evan (Ashlie) Bornzin, Inger (Clark) Kirkman; great-grandchildren: Dylan and Kaylyn Schmer, Brooke, Taylor and Riley Younger, Kelsey, Cara and Rhett Larsen, Lora Bailey, Brendon Younger, Austin, Cassie, and Westley Hiatt, Samantha, Aden, and Nathan Hiatt, and Tommy Conlan. She was preceded in death by husband Marvin, parents Josephine and Ingebret Oanes, brothers Engval and Edward Oanes, sister, Ruth Becker, grandson Jeffrey Conlan and great-granddaughter Lisa Bailey. Services will be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Colorado Springs on Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at 11am. Visitation will precede the service (10am-11am).
