Seyhan Dwelis Obituary

Seyhan Tahire Dwelis, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend passed away on Thursday, August 18th, 2011. Through it all, she carried herself with dignity, wisdom, and beauty. Seyhan was born in Balikesir, Turkey on March 5th, 1945, and first came to America in the 1950's with her father, Cezmi Berktin, who was Cultural Attaché to the United States. She returned permanently in 1963 and became an American citizen in 1968. In December of 1969, Seyhan and Alex began a love affair. A love affair with a catch: six children. She wrapped her arms around this new family, a mix of his and hers, and emerged Mom; forever shaping each of our lives with her love. Our first move as a family was to Colorado Springs in 1972. Here she blossomed, improving herself and the world which surrounded her. She graduated with the degree of Master of Arts, Anthropology from the University of Colorado, became an archeologist, a curator, and professor at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. In 1981, she revisited Turkey, uniting her past with the present. She will be deeply missed by her soul mate, Alex; her children, Alec and Jennifer, Leah Rae and Chris, Mark and Cindy, John and Shelly, Karen, Denis and Monica; her thirteen grandchildren, Jolene, Leslie, Cassidy, Alexa, John Thomas, Jeff, Kristi, Jordan, Dawn, Jasmine, Christina, Jessica, and David; five great-grandchildren, Baby Seyhan, Alexia, Zoe, Trevor, and Ellie; and many dear friends. Her family and friends stand in admiration and gratitude for all the love, guidance, and grace she brought to our lives. She remains forever strong, spiritual, kind, brave, caring, elegant, funny, intelligent, and beautiful. Funeral service will be held on Friday, August 26, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Evergreen Cemetery, 1005 S. Hancock Avenue in Colorado Springs. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care @www.pikespeakhospice.org in the name of Seyhan Dwelis.

I knew Seyhan from UCCS and the Pikes Peak Chapter of the Colorado Archaeological Society. She shared her great knowledge willingly and without expectation. I am very grateful to have known her brilliance and beauty.

Alex and family,

I have been gone for 3 weeks and just learned of Seyhan's passing this morning in the paper. I am devastated by her loss. Although we had our busy lives and did not see each other much, I considered her my closest friend. I am deeply upset that I was not here to say goodbye. I will love and think of her always. I will hold you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. She was so proud of all of you...especially her namesake, "Baby Seyhan." Seyhan was truly a gift to all of us who knew her-kind, generous, thoughtful, loving-I could go on forever.

The only words of comfort I can think of is to remind you (us) that she will be in our hearts forever...

God Bless all of you in this time of great sorrow.

Seyhan was a dear friend to me. I had the wonderful privilege of attending college and graduate school with her and working "in the field" with her as well. She was a kind-hearted, compassionate soul and I feel blessed for having known her for 20 short years.

Mom...As I look around at the beauty in our family, I know that your hand has nurtured, supported, and guided it. Both close and a far. Your smile warmed our hearts. Your words soothed our souls. You will always be with us as we travel through our lives. Ever shining like a beacon in the dark.
When I saw the rays of sun light breaking through the clouds today, I thought of how your love cast over us. Quiet and unselfish, but always noticed like the sun rays on our faces.
Walk with the Lord now. For we will reunite in our own time.
Until then you are in our hearts.
Peace be with you.
A loving son
