Sharon Engle, a beloved wife and mother from Woodland Park, Colorado, died unexpectedly on May 23, 2021 at the age of 72 in a local mountain bike crash. It happened during one of her favorite activities, riding mountain bikes with friends.
Sharon is survived by her husband, Lynn Engle; her four children, Joshua (Devin) Engle, Sarah (James) Johnson, Hannah (Kevin) Engle, and Rachel Engle; her five grandchildren, Ellianna, Kaiden, Teagan, Gavin, and Quinton Johnson; and her brother Richard (Louise) Smith. She was predeceased by her brother Larry Smith and by her parents, Willard and Louise Smith, and she was looking forward to the birth of a sixth grandchild.
Sharon was born in Tampa, Florida on December 29, 1948 to Willard and Louise Smith. While growing up, she spent some time in Germany and graduated from high school in Alaska. She began working at Eagle Lake Camp in 1974 as a wilderness guide and winter conference cook. While there, she met the love of her life, Lynn Engle, a fellow wilderness guide. They were married in the Glen Eyrie castle in 1977 and began raising their family at Eagle Lake Camp, along with many Siberian husky dogs. Additionally, she was a key part of starting the horse-riding program and enjoyed mentoring other women throughout the years. Toward the later years of the children's education, Sharon went back to college and attained a bachelor's degree in Dietetics and Nutrition, becoming a dietitian and nutrition consultant in 2007.
Sharon was a very devoted friend and outdoorswoman. She enjoyed skiing, mountain climbing, horseback riding, hunting, and later in life even joined a local women's mountain biking race team. What she loved most of all was being with others and having fun adventures. This all happened over an amazing 47 years living at Eagle Lake Camp in the Colorado mountains.
A private memorial service is scheduled for Friday, June 4.
