Sharon Garro Obituary

Our beautiful Sharon passed away peacefully in the presence of her family on Saturday, October 30th, in Colorado Springs, after an 18 month battle with brain cancer. Sharon is survived by her husband George, her daughter Natalie, her son, Nick, her sister Lynn Regina of McMurray, PA, her parents Bill and Elinore Hughes of Pittsburgh, PA, her brother Bill Hughes of Washington, PA, and her brother Allyn Hughes of Ponchatoula, LA, as well as seven nephews and five nieces. Sharon is also survived by many, many close friends who were very special to her throughout her life. Sharon served in the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, where she achieved the rank of Captain, which is equivalent of Colonel, and retired with 20 years of service. She did everything in life to the best of her ability. The grace and dignity with which she fought this horrible disease was an inspiration to us all. Never did she shy away from her friends, despite the handicaps imposed upon her. Never did she refuse an invitation to a gathering, because she loved people and people loved her. From her we learned how to live, and also how to die. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Saturday, November 13th, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church, 420 N. Nevada Avenue, Colorado Springs, Colorado, with a reception following at the Garden of the Gods Club, 3320 Mesa Road from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. A second memorial service will also be held the following week on November 20th at Peace Lutheran Church, 107 Carol Drive, McMurray, Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pikes Peak Hospice, 825 E. Pikes Peak Avenue, Suite 600, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80903.

You can't think of Sharon without smiling. She was, without a doubt, the nicest, most considerate, and caring person I've ever known. Sharon would light up every room she entered with her positive attitude, beautiful smile, and gorgeous hair that always looked perfect. I love that she loved: desserts, sharing her homemade treats, sunshine, warm weather, living life to the fullest and most of all...her wonderful family and friends. Sharon was one-of-kind, good people! Her goodness lives on in Natalie, Nick and George. She is missed.

Sweet, beautiful Sharon - what a blessing and privilege it has been to know you and call you my dear friend. You are truly my hero, teaching me how to be a more compassionate and accepting person and such an amazing inspiration as you battled your illness. You handled it with such grace and dignity, always keeping your door and heart open to all. I love you and will miss you so much, but I know you are with all the other angels now flying with that beautiful free spirit of yours. We pray for comfort and peace for George, Natalie, Nick, Lynn, Sharon's parents, and the rest of her family as you go through this very difficult time. You are all in our prayers. With love, Kerry and Joe

Sharon was such a generous lady, she shared so many things with my daughter Audrey, taking her places she couldn't have gone and opening her home to her so generously. Always a bag of frozen cranberries in the freezer for her. She was one of those people who just knew what others needed. Our condolences and heart felt sadness that the world isn't as bright without her. Shaw-Hassed Family

Dearest George, Natalie and Nick,
There are no words to express such a great loss of your Mom and of your wife. Visiting and spending time with all of you over the years George has shown us what a gentle, kind and loving husband and father you have been and are. Sharon was blessed to have you as you were blessed to have her as well. When your Mom would speak about you, Natalie and Nick, her face was one big smile. She truly loved you both. Cherish her memories and find comfort and strength in family and let God do the rest.

Beautiful Sharon with the song in her voice...as a fellow AGD Sorority Sister in her Pledge Class at PSU in 1966, I was honored to have spent many wonderful hours and youthful happy experiences with our Sharon. No one epitomized the true word of "Friend" more than she. Years pass and times change, but the memories I have with Sharon and our AGD Sisters will never fade since they are some of the best in my life. We will miss you. God Bless your wonderful family in this time of sorrow. Love, Patty Vanyo

It was always so nice having wonderful neighbors such as yourselves. I glad I finally decided to crash your Cabo vacation and include our family. It's a beautiful place and enjoyed the company. Sharon has always been there for everyone, including myself I'm going to miss her so much. Im sure she's already made plenty of friends in heaven and we all have special angels watching over us because of her.

It is odd that there is a place to help you search for words...there are no words that equal the kindness of a heart that ceases to beat. Sharon had a kindness and I am grateful to have known her, but even more fortunate that she touched the life of my son, Justin. He always thought that Sharon was special and sometimes I thought he found her to be as much as his friend as Natalie was. I will forever treasure the transparency of her kindness and sincerity.

I remember after I was diagnosed with breast cancer she was my first comforting call to tell me it was all going to be fine. I don't think I ever told her what that meant to me. Thank you Sharon we will miss you dearly.

She still looked great in her uniform after retirement.

We will always remember Sharon as a beautiful, engaging, warm-hearted and very special person. Sharon and George were the very first friends we met in the KCE neighborhood. We have so many wonderful memories of our 15 years spent in KC and many of them include Sharon and George. Sharon was a gifted hostess who made everyone feel special and welcomed in her home. We will never forget the very special evening Sharon planned on the anniversary of the Titanic tragedy, where she totally re-created the menu of the first class dining room with impeccable detail. We will cherish the photographs where we were all dressed in era attire. Of course, it is Sharon's beautiful smile which stands out! As a side note: Sharon prepared a sauce reduction all day long the day before the dinner. George, in his wisdom, decided to help clean the kitchen and proceeded to pour Sharon's sauce down the sink. So many memories... Our hearts are broken with Sharon's passing. We pray for our Lord's comfort and peace for George, Natalie and Nick, as well as Sharon's parents and siblings. May Sharon rest in peace and may the memories of her beautiful person comfort all of you.

We were so blessed to have been next door neighbors to the Garros from 1995 until 2004. Words cannot describe how wonderful they were. Sharon was "Miss Hospitality" in the neighborhood. We watched Sharon go through many medical difficulties through the years but never heard her say-why me? Our hearts are so saddened by Sharon's passing and will miss her so very much. God be with all of you!

I am sorry for your loss. Sharon will always hold a special place in my heart, because she was an exceptional person. I was fortunate to call her my best friend. Sharon was a magnet for friendship, and treated each of her friends special. My memories are of childhood events that demonstrated Sharon's caring for all her classmates--no exceptions. Leading by example, she taught me how to be a better person by being more accepting and compassionate, to live life to its fullest, and to reach beyond expectations. Even through the pain of her loss, we all are comforted in recalling how Sharon inspired so many. I love you and will always miss you, Sharon.

We were so saddened to hear of Sharon's death and pray for God's blessing on her family. It is never easy to lose a loved one and it is certainly much more difficult to understand when they are taken too soon. Please accept our sincere sympathy and know that Sharon's entire family is in our prayers. We were at Montour with Sharon, Bill and Lynn and have fond memories of those days. We know Sharon will be missed by all of her family and friends and we pray that God's love enfolds you during this difficult time.

May Sharon rest in peace secure in our memories, and there are many. Many of us from out of state have not been able to be there as often as we would have liked but that does not in any way diminish our hopes and wishes for Nat, George and Nick going forward. Sharon left a great legacy in you.

I am heartbroken to learn of Sharon's passing, and my prayers are with the Garro and Hughes families. Sharon was a good friend and fellow cheerleader back at Montour High School, and we shared the walk down the aisle at graduation in 1966. I spoke with her on a few occasions this past year, and was so hopeful that she would once again triumph over cancer. Sharon was a kind and loving person, one of the best. She will truly be missed.
