Sherry Ekerholm Obituary

Sherry Lynn Ekerholm was born to eternal life on August 31, 2011. She was born on February 9, 1953, in Las Animas, Colorado, to Clarence and Effie (Forbes) Hunke. She was an excellent organizer who was always planning for the day she might get hit by a bus - and that bus turned out to be pancreatic cancer. She found it true that being aware of your approaching death makes the days you have left even more precious. Sherry married Steven Ekerholm on October 25, 1975 and they were blessed with three daughters, Kimberly (Michael) Conrardy of Castle Rock, Katie (Kevin) Simmons and Stefanie (Zachary) Gatti all of Colorado Springs. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Manitou Springs PEO Chapter K. She worked at UCCS for many years in the student government, student life and new student orientation departments. She enjoyed making the world a more beautiful place with her green thumb, and being "Nana" to her precious grandchildren. In addition to her husband and daughters, she is survived by her sister, Patricia Fairbanks of Colorado Springs, mother-in-law, Carol Roberts of Manitou Springs, and grandchildren, Haylie Peterson, Connor Foltz, Dane Conrardy, Gabriel and Maxton Gatti. Donations may be made in Sherry's name to KPC Kid's Place or Project Cuddle. Visitation will be held at Swan-Law Funeral Directors on Monday, September 5, 2011 from 1-4 p.m.. Funeral services will be on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 420 N. Nevada Avenue, Colorado Springs. Private inurnment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery.

Being at Sherry's memorial service today reminded me of a time when she and I shared her most intimate thoughts and goals. She wanted to make a big career decision and she wasn't sure about joining the Student Success Center during that time of reorganization. As a counseling intern I helped her decide by working with her through hypnosis. Sherry was so open about her desire to help as many students as she could that, in the end, her decision to join the SSC was an easy one. I know she never regretted that career move and the Student Success Center certainly benefited from her presence - in every way. Her desire to help never wavered and she always maintained her positive and professional attitude. She taught me about grace and I am so thankful to have known her and to have counted her as my friend. Love to you all-

All of our love to the Ekerholm Family and our deepest gratitude to Sherry for all the ways she enriched our lives. This Native American Poem is one of our favorites:

"Hold on to what is good, even if it is a handful of earth. Hold on to what you belive, even if it is a tree which stands by itself. Hold on to what you must do, even if it is a long way from here. Hold on to life, even when it is easier to let go. Hold on to my hand, even when I have gone away from you."

Sherry, please keep holding our hands.

Love, Tamara, Kirk and Jordan

Sherry's light remains. What a remarkable person! Thoughts of Sherry always bring memories of laughter, her immense love for her family, her unflinching commitment to excellence, and her pit bull determination! Just a few weeks ago, Sherry read a children's book to three of us who were visiting; it was about pond bugs becoming dragonflies and was a book she was giving each of her grandchildren - and she read to us! I will never, ever forget that experience. May there be a soft place to land for the hearts of Steve, Kim, Katie, Stef and all the grandkids.
