Shirley Junker Obituary

Shirley Marie Junker, died on August 27th at the age of 84. She was born in Milwaukee, WI to Leora and Erwin Goetsch. She graduated in 1943 from the Mount Sinai Hospital School of Nursing, and she practiced there as a nurse during World War II. In 1944 she married Harold R. Junker, and she tirelessly supported him and their growing family as his career in the United States Air Force took them from the Philippine Islands, to Alaska, the Gulf Coast, and finally, to Colorado Springs. She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church since 1971, where she served for many years on the altar guild. She and Harold were married for 60 years. He preceded her in death by just seven months. She loved birds and flowers, and the colors of the summer sky. She had an irrepressible sense of humor, and a hearty appetite for puns, jokes, and impressions. She was a connoisseur of mystery novels and chocolate, and an expert on British and American movies of the 1940's and 50's. She had a sunny disposition, and she was an indomitable optimist. On the day before she died, she listened to and sang along with her some of her favorite songs and hymns, and she talked of her plans to get better and go back to her cabin in the mountains. She is survived by her four sons; six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

I will miss my Grandma very much. Her wit and positive attitude along with many other of her wonderful qualities are the things I will remember most about her. She was a strong woman with a generous heart. I am very sad at the thought of her not being with us anymore but am glad she is with Grandpa now and look forward to seeing her again someday.
