Shirley Mae Smith passed away peacefully on January 22, 2025, at the age of 85 in Colorado Springs, CO. Born on March 10, 1939, Shirley embarked on a life marked by devotion to her family, a vibrant social life as a military spouse, and a variety of interests and careers that brought joy to her and those around her.
Shirley was the beloved wife of Carroll Smith for 64 years, with whom she shared a journey as a military spouse for over 26 years. This life led them to various locations, including an enriching ten-year stay in Kwajalein, where the community became an extended family to her. Throughout her life, Shirley was engaged in diverse activities; she was an avid participant in bowling, golf, snow skiing, scuba diving, and even competed in a Rustman Triathlon. Known for her culinary skills, Shirley's baking, especially her chocolate pies, were a highlight at church auctions.
Her career was as diverse as her hobbies. After graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School, Shirley worked at Mutual of Omaha and Dairy Queen. She took pride in her roles at UPS for ten years in Colorado Springs and as a secretary for the Fire Department in Kwajalein. Her work ethic and versatility in her professional life were admired by all who knew her.
Shirley's faith was an important aspect of her life, actively participating in the Holy Cross Lutheran Church. She was involved in her church's community, particularly with Young at Heart. She and Carroll would help in the Food Pantry, reflecting her caring nature and desire to help others.
She is survived by her husband, Carroll, her children Denise Powers, Craig Smith (Diane), and Pamela Rousseau (David); She had 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Arnold and Dorothy Niemann, and her sister, Patty Hansen.
In accordance with her wishes, Shirley will be cremated and interred at the Pikes Peak Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Holy Cross Lutheran Church Food Pantry, 4125 Constitution Ave., Colorado Springs, CO 80909, honoring Shirley's legacy of generosity and community service. Her friends and family will forever remember her quick wit, radiant smile, and the warmth she brought into their lives.
