Shirley Starr Obituary

Shirley Starr, age 70, a resident to Colorado Springs since 2002 and formerly of Safford, Arizona and Duncan, Arizona, passed away on Monday July 11, 2011 at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs after a long battle with Cancer. She had retired from the Phelps-Dodge Copper Mining Company in Morenci, Arizona. Shirley Ann Starr was born on October 20, 1940 in Riesel, Texas to the late Jesse and Ethel (Thomas) Starr. After raising her family, she later became the well known and loved mill site gate security person for many years at the Phelps-Dodge Copper Mine. She enjoyed driving in the mountains, the opera and was a generous but stern - mannered mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She will be dearly missed. She is survived by her four daughters: Ethel Lorene "Lori" Duncan of Tucson, Arizona; JoAnn McNair of Duncan, Arizona, Rebecca Duncan of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Melanie (and husband Steven) Lawrence of Clifton, Arizona. She is also survived by her friend and caregiver: Sharon Bennett of Colorado Springs. Shirley has eight grandchildren: Robert, Venessa, Andrea, Jake, Jesse, Sarah, Taylor and Stevie. She has eight great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her beloved Min Pin: "Baby." She was preceded in death by her companion: John F. Bennett; and three brothers: Bobby, Roy and Jake. A visitation will take place from 5:00 - 7:00 pm Thursday evening at the Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home. A Prayer Service will follow at 7:00 pm. Cremation is planned and graveside services will be held at the Louis B. Hazelton Memorial Cemetery in Buckeye, Arizona. Memorials in Shirley's name may be made to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, 610 Abbott Lane, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80905.

Im so sorry for your loss. I know the pain. I lost my mom last year. I miss you guys and often think of the times i spent at your house and considered your mom as my second mom, and she always treated me as a daughter. i still live in quinton ok and would love to hear from you. Jesse,
Our hearts feel your pain in the loss of your Grandma. Always take comfort in knowing that she loves you very much and she was proud of you. Your Grandma has instilled many good qualities and values in you and her legacy will live on through you. She will always be in your heart and the memories you have of her will live on forever. She is flying high, in peace, with the angels now. Our prayers and thoughts are with all of your family.
