Shirley Sutherland Obituary

Shirley Rosemary Sutherland, daughter of Austin William and Velma Vaughn Ingrum was born on May 27, 1927 in Charleston, Illinois and passed away on Friday, September 2, 2016 after a lengthy illness.

Due to her father's health, the family moved to Colorado Springs in 1929 when Shirley was 2 years old and spent the next 87 years of her life in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Shirley attended Columbia Elementary School, North Junior High School and Colorado Springs High School, graduating with the class of "45". She was a member of a High School Sorority, First United Methodist Church, and President of the Eta Alumni of the Order of Rainbow for girls, as well as, a volunteer at the Goodwill "Silver N' Such" shop for many years. She was employed by the Exchange National Bank for many years before becoming a homemaker.

Shirley enjoyed traveling and had visited all but two states, Montana and Alaska. She and her husband were partners in an antique and collectible business for 25 years. They liked to attend garage sales and auctions all over the country. Shirley loved animals, especially dogs. Everyone she touched enjoyed spending time with her and listening to her stories about her life and her many adventures with her husband and family.

Shirley married her high school sweetheart, James L. Sutherland on August 16, 1947, and celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary in August. To this union 3 children were born, Deborah Jean, Michael Kent and Jeffery Todd.

Her parents, William Austin, Velma Ingrum and an older brother, Charles Ingrum, preceded her in death. Shirley is survived by her husband, James, her children, Deborah Jean Bruce, Colorado Springs, Michael Kent Sutherland (Diane) of Parma, Idaho, and Jeffery Todd, Colorado Springs. Shirley is also survived by two grandchildren Jennifer Hartman (Rod) of Hastings, Nebraska, Patrick Bruce, Colorado Springs and four great grandchildren, Peyton and Colbie Hartman, Hastings, Nebraska and George and Henry Bruce of Colorado Springs.

The family would like to thank the wonderful doctors, nurses, CNA's, volunteers, chaplain and therapy dogs at Pikes Peak Hospice, 6th floor, Penrose Main Hospital for their loving and compassionate care of Shirley and her family.

Memorial services will be held at Swan-Law Funeral Home on Friday, September 16, 2016 1:00 pm. Followed by a private family service. The family wishes that, in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to Pikes Peak Hospice, Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region or Silver Key-Meals on Wheels.
