STEPHEN CAMP Obituary

Stephen Camp's first sunrise was August 4, 1948, in Fawn River Township, Michigan, a few miles north of his family's farm in Howe, Indiana. The sun set on Steve Camp's life on December 14, 2014, concluding a lifetime filled with compassion for his fellow man, and all creatures great and small. Steve was raised on his family's farm, a farm that has been in the Camp family for more than 150 years. He treasured his childhood days growing up on the farm, running through his Hoosier fields of corn and soybeans, fishing along the banks of the Little Pigeon River, calling in the cows and sheep, and feeding the pigs. It was there that he developed his everlasting love for animals. As a boy he cared for the runts of the litter, the found bird with a broken wing, the abandoned bunny, and the myriad of injured barn cats that straggled their way into his life. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Stine and Annalee. Steve is survived by his loving wife of 44 years Laura (Rincon), his precious daughter Lorelei (Joseph) Kroulaidis, his treasured sister-in-law and brothers-in-law: Susan and James Harmening; Patrick Rincon, his dear niece Elizabeth (Rincon), accomplished goddaughter Erica Shulha-Tolar, D.V.M., and a remarkable array of friends from many walks of life. Steve graduated from Purdue University's School of Veterinary Science and Medicine in 1972, and spent the entirety of his 42 years of professional life in small animal practice in Arlington Heights. He treated thousands upon thousands of animals at his animal hospital, the Arlington Heights Animal Hospital, where he proudly practiced with Dr. R. Sefcik for 26 years. Steve loved sports. He lettered in 3 varsity sports at Lakeland High School, went on to become an Illinois High School Athletic Association basketball referee for 19 years, played 16" softball for many years with the Arlington Heights Park District softball leagues, and he golfed from the time he was 14 years old. Fishing and playing cards with his buddies Dick, Henry, Joe, and Ray were some of his happiest times. A loyal Purdue alumnus, Steve was an avid fan of Purdue football and basketball. He particularly cherished autumn because of the camaraderie of friends at the Purdue tailgate parties. Steve was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, a Lifetime member of the Purdue Alumni Association, a John Purdue Club member for 34 years, a member of Purdue University's President's Council, and was a member of the: American Veterinary Medical Association, Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association, and the Chicago Veterinary Medical Association of which he was Life Member and a past executive board member. In 2007, Steve was honored to be a nominee for the Morris Animal Foundation's "Best Veterinarian in America." Visitation will be Sunday, December 21st, from 3-8 PM, at Glueckert Funeral Home, Ltd., 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road (four blocks south of Palatine Road), Arlington Heights, IL, 60005. A Memorial Service will be conducted on Monday, December 22nd, at 11 AM, at Glueckert Funeral Home. Honoring Dr. Camp's love and commitment to animals, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Buddy Foundation (a no-kill animal shelter), 65 W. Seegers Road, Arlington Heights, IL 60005. Funeral information and condolences, www.GlueckertFH.com or 847-253-0168.

To the family of Dr. Camp,
We are so sorry for your loss. We have brought our dogs to Dr. Camp since the early 80's. His compassion and expertise was second to none. He was more than a veterinarian to us, but a true friend. We are thankful for his care and attention to our pets. I am also grateful that we had an opportunity to play a round of golf, having such a great time on the course, that the game itself was second to the laughs we had.

Our condolences.

We started bringing our dogs to Dr. Camp since 1980. He was a wonderful, caring and dedicated man and doctor. I was so sorry when he cut back his days at the office. I always trusted his opinion on the care of our animals. He will surely be missed by many. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Our condolences to your family, Dr. Camp was the only vet that my mother would ever take our pets to for top notch care. Long time patients of Arlington Animal Hospital since the 70's he was a gift to creatures big and small who were blessed to be in his care. Thoughts and prayers for your family

It is sad that he left us so soon. He was a good man with a big heart.

Such a heavy heart has by all who had the honor, privilege, opportunity, to know Dr. Camp, personally and professionally.
Such a devoted and loving family man, and just as devoted to his patients , his colleagues and their families.
Compassionate, generous, genuine ,old school, are just a few words from a very lengthy list to describe, the man, the husband, the father, the friend, the doctor, most of all, the human being!
that quietly has left an imprint of himself in our hearts.
Always in my heart, Judy Klein

As a Kennel Tech in 1978, I remember Dr. Camp saw me playing with a large German Shepherd in the kennel that had been abandoned and adopted by the AH Animal Hospital. He saw that we were a perfect match and said "You want her? You can have her. Just take her home and let us use that big kennel for boarding.". To this day, my dog Ruby Begonia is still one of the best things that ever happened to me. Dr. Camp was there at the end too, when Ruby was very sick in 1990. I will always treasure his gentle nature.

I will always remember Dr. Camp's Christmas parties hosted by Laura at their lovely home. The fun of watching Dr. Camp and Dr. Sefcik play cards during lunch and then break into overdrive when emergency surgeries came in. What a wonderful, talented man! I know that he will enter heaven and see all the good he had done with the talents that he had been given.

So very sorry to hear this. I started going to Dr. Camp when he first opened the practice. He was kind and compassionate and very gentle with my animals. I still have an article he wrote years ago in response to Jack Mabley's column in the Daily Herald. It was a beautiful example of his passion and dedication to animals.

So sorry to hear about Steve's passing. I played Softball with him on the "Manimals" for many years in the 1990's. He took care of my Dog and Cat at the time and he will dearly be missed.

What a loss. I've known him since he opened his practice in A.H. He was always so cheerful and positive you couldn't help but like him. Our Golden Retrievers loved him too. He died too soon he still had so much to offer the animal kingdom. My dogs will be happy to see him in heaven along. RIP.

"Heaven is for Real" and I am sure that is where Steve is now. I am sure he is young and healthy and awaiting our eventual arrival.

So sorry to hear of his passing. He was always so pleasant and caring every time we took our pets to his office. A very compassionate loving person who was a great credit to his profession.
