Stephen DeJong Obituary

Dr. Stephen J. DeJong February 23, 1933 - May 10, 2016 Age 83. Retired Department of Corrections, State of Colorado

Stephen was born February 23, 1933 in the kitchen of his parents Pershing, IA home to P.K. and Alice (Langstraat) DeJong. Stephen received his doctorate degree from CSU in 1975, after graduating 8th grade, to pursue apprenticeship in building with his father, and brothers.

He is survived by his sons Phillip (Alisha) DeJong, Thomas DeJong, Timothy DeJong, Thomas Simmering, Robert Simmering, and Mike Simmering. Steve is survived by 11 grandchildren 4 great grandchildren, Destini, Myracle , Jake, and Riley. Stephen is also survived by his siblings David (Sylvia) DeJong, Esther (Eno) Gadbois, Marvin (Gwen) DeJong, and Naomi (Dennis) Nelson, and many nieces and nephews. Stephen is also survived by his partner Beverly Howes-Corbin.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, the love his life Mildred (Nolan) DeJong, and brother Donald DeJong, a son Mark Simmering, and many other loved ones.

He was a man dedicated to learning, teaching and being the best he could be. Steve fell in love with wood turning and excelled in the field to a Master Wood Turner with a piece currently displayed in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC. He was highly regarded as a teacher of the art of Wood Turning worldwide. He was featured in multiple magazines.

Services will be held at Cappadona Funeral Home, 1020 E. Filmore St., Colorado Springs, CO 80907 on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at 10:00 am.
