Steve, 84, of Colorado Springs, CO passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his wife and children. He was born June 1, 1937 in Elma, WA to Joseph and Stella Michalak. He was the fourth of six brothers. He graduated from Elma High School in 1955 and joined the Army shortly after. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Education from St. Martins College in WA and his Masters degree in Liberal Arts Education from Colorado College.
He married Shirley Delinsky in June 1969 and they moved to Colorado in 1971. Together they raised 3 children; Mark, Matt and Annie. Steve worked as a teacher for nearly 40 years and retired from Bates Elementary in School District 11 in 1999. He went on to work for Avis Rental Car for several years post retirement.
Steve was a quiet man who was always ready to make people laugh or smile with a quick witted joke or remark. He loved sports, especially football and Notre Dame. He enjoyed going to football games with family, the outdoors and driving in the high country. He enjoyed the symphony and classical music. Riding his scooter was one of his favorite pastimes and he knew the names of the many fourteeners across Colorado and was always looking forward to his next adventure.
He leaves behind his wife Shirley of 52 years, his son Mark and his wife Glennette of Canon City, Matt and his wife Lori of Colorado Springs and his daughter Annie Weaver and her husband Jason of Colorado Springs. He loved his grandchildren Brooke, Garret, Bethany, Grace and Addison and he looked forward to seeing them as they were "the apples of his eye".
Steve finally rode off into the sunset to meet his Maker on November 10, 2021.
His Celebration of Life will be held on Monday November, 22, 2021 at 10:00am at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Colorado Springs with a reception to follow. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Francis of Assisi.
