Steven Mullens Obituary

Steven Ulysses Mullens, of Colorado Springs passed away at his home on June 21, 2015, after a brief illness.

Steven ("Steve") was born in Binghamton, New York, on May 28, 1945, to Sylvia and Ben Mullens. He attended Syracuse University and Syracuse University College of Law in New York. Steve met his wife, Joan, while attending Syracuse University and they married on June 23, 1968.

Upon graduating law school, Steve worked for legal services in Syracuse. In 1974, Steve, Joan and their two sons, Jed and Scott, moved from Syracuse to Colorado Springs where Steve opened a law office. Soon after moving to the Springs, Steve began to focus his law practice on workers compensation law in order to help people who were injured on the job. He opened a second office in Pueblo, Colorado to better serve that community. Steve went on to become one of the foremost practitioners of workers compensation law in the state. Over the past 40 years he represented thousands of injured workers. He was known not only for his dedication to providing outstanding legal services for his clients but also for being a mentor to younger attorneys who appreciated his time and advice.

In addition to practicing law, Steve was a co-founder and board member of Peak Education, a community-based not-for-profit that help students graduate high school, go on to higher education and pursue rewarding careers.

Steve loved reading books - especially fiction - and was an avid book collector. He also enjoyed playing golf, travelling and fishing. Most of all Steve loved spending time with his family and friends who appreciated his kindness, loyalty, quick wit and unflinching sense of humor.

Steve is survived by his wife Joan, his sons Jed and Scott, his daughter-in-law Molly, his grandchildren Dalia and Zachary, his twin brother David, his sister Judy, and an extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law, who love him and will sorely miss him.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Steve's memory may be made online to Peak Education at http://peakedu.org/, to Temple Shalom at http://www.templeshalom.com/ or to the Colorado Springs Pioneer's Museum at http://www.cspm.org/.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 25 at 10:00AM at Temple Shalom, 1523 E. Monument Street, Colorado Springs.

I just found out about Steve leaving this earth. He was my attorney and he truly cared about me as a person. He encouraged me to love myself and be healthier, he made me feel valued as a person with very few words. This earth will feel the loss of such a uniquely kind, knowledgeable, professional man.

I found myself in litigation last week. The lawyer I had was no Steve Mullens. I will always ask under my breath in any situation where thinking comes into play say to myself " What would Mully do here?" Or more than that say " Mully do something" that is the way I say my daily prayers now".That man was light years ahead of any lawyer I have ever run into. His courage and conviction and originality are vacant in the teaming thousands of lawyers who come and go. How can I find him again?

I can with all confidence say that Steve was used by God in securing a wonderful and sustaining, MAJOR chapter of my life. Learning of his death brought great sadness to me. I last spoke with him a few years ago. I owe him more than I can now fully comprehend or express. I have heard that a sharp sense of humor is a leading indicator of intelligence. If that is the case, Steve was a genius. These days especially, great men are few and far between. As far as I am concerned, Steve was, in heart and mind, a truly extraordinarily great man. The fragile and painful brevity of this life has been once again underscored in his passing. Speaking for myself, my wife and family, "We love you, Steve."

I grew up in Binghamton with Steve and David, and therefore have many fond memories of our youth. While I hadn't been in touch for many years, I did have the opportunity to reconnect at our high school reunion Oct. 2014. We all had a great time and I feel fortunate to have had that time together. His untimely passing saddens us deeply. Harvey and I send our heartfelt sympathy to your families.

I met Steve in 1975. I can still remember his blue blazer, kaki slacks, and hush puppy shoes. The thing that made him such a good person is that he saw the good in everyone he met. I have to say that he was one of the best people I have ever met. We will all miss him that is not the point. The world would be a much better place if he was still here. That is especially true with all the people he came into contact with. There will be no one that can take his place.

I had the deepest respect for his work ethic towards the injured and his fearless representation at all stages of cases. He was truly a great person with great character and a brilliant mind. I loved watching him in court. He will be sorely missed in our legal community as there is no one else like him. My deepest condolences to his family, friends, his associates and his loyal staff.
