STEVEN SHANBON Obituary

SHANBON, Steven, 61
Passed peacefully in his home as he wished, with his wife and soulmate Karen, along with his life time friend, Robin Bettany by his side. He fought a bitter cruel disease of Cancer, which we all choose to say he won, and not lost the fight. He courageously endured 11 years of treatment, and amazingly, it wasn't the physical pain that crushed him, his heart broke knowing he would be leaving all those that he so dearly loved. His grandchildren being the best medicine one could ever have, brightened even the saddest days. Although, he never fathered children of his own, but through his marriage with Karen, he was finally blessed with a daughter, Kara, and her three beautiful children, Taylor, Alexis and Ayden. He then became a 'POPPY' for the first time! He finally learned the greatest joy that life has to offer. He had many TRUE friends that were with him throughout his entire life. He had an amazing ability to light up the room with his humorous witty stories that would captivate all. No matter where he was, here in Windsor or in a foreign land, his genuine interest in people would magnetize them to him. His family and extended family and their traditions he held close. He had a close bond with his Auntie Ducky, sister of his mother Shirley, now deceased. He never would admit that he actually took any of her advise...but yes, he did listen! When he spoke of his family, many of his friends were considered family as well. In fact, no one ever really knew who was and who wasn't! Steven's life was centred around his work. It wasn't just a job to him, it was his life... and he loved it! He loved the people, he loved to sell to them and his knack for design was incredible. He worked in his family store at the age of 14, sweeping floors. His father Louis, now deceased, taught his ideas and ways of running a retail store to him. Steven succeeded his fathers' teachings and made Hi Neighbor Floor Covering a major competitor with the Big Box stores. Staying in the downtown core, and at the same time dealing with our tough economy he had successfully defied all odds. He has long time loyal employees of 20 years that he taught and moulded...and each one (past and present) will admit that he had greatly impacted their lives. He has touched so many lives in our community, and has never expected any recognition. It just made him happy! He lived a simple honest life and had great pleasure in giving. A generous donation to purchase a room in the cancer ward at Windsor Regional Hospital was made in memory of his mother Shirley. And, for many years, he made it possible for Hi Neighbor Floor Covering to sponsor children's sports teams, hockey, soccer and baseball! A 20 year member of Windsor Yacht Club, Steven loved boating. His boat was meticulously kept up throughout the years, and even though others bought newer, bigger boats, he loved the one he chose years before. He appreciated great technology, finely tuned motors and quality built cars. To honour Steven, his friends and family ask that you simply identify with his life's purpose to light a candle this weekend in memory of a life well spent and to take a few moments to reflect on how we, too, can bring light into the world. A single life produces much radiance when that person follows his dreams, tries to do what is right, and refuses to let obstacles stand in the way. Steven Shanbon did it his way. The world is better for him having lived. We are better for having known him. Steven we will miss you! We admired your strength, courage and wisdom, and you will always be remembered by all. Though his life may have ended too soon, it was a life complete in so many ways. Steven is survived by his beloved wife Karen (nee Lefave), Loving father of Kara Thoman, Loving Poppy to Taylor, Ayden and Alexis. Dear Brother of Shelley Alexander (nee Shanbon), Abbee Shanbon, Marc Shanbon (deceased), Son of the late Louis and Shirley Shanbon, Uncle to Mara Alexander Special thanks to Robin Bettany, without your help it would have been unbearable. And to his cousin Ethel Valihora, which was a pillar of strength to him. Thanks to the nurses at St. Elizabeth and Hospice. Steven's life will be celebrated Sunday, April 20, 2014 at 11:00 a.m., Janisse Funeral Home, 1139 Ouellette Avenue, Rabbi Jeffrey Ableser officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated in memory of Shirley, Louis and Marc Shanbon endowment fund, "Send Kids to Camp" at the Windsor Jewish Community Center for children of all denominations.

Steven
We followed our fathers footsteps.
Our familie's shared friendships at our summer cottage, and at your home when we were kids.
Our fathers were strong associates in business. They supported each other, yours from buying and mine from selling to yours for many years. Very much the same as you and I.
Your family home was always open to our family. It is where my father always stayed when in Windsor on business. The very same for me when in Windsor.
Our friend ship surpassed our business relationship.
All of our many meandering escapades on land in one of your many power cars and on water in the HOT SALSA will always remain with me.
Our brother friend relationship is our legacy.
You will forever be loved and missed.
Karen your love, strength and caring for Steven will always be an endearment to his family and friends hearts.
Our love goes out to you and your family.

My mother, Luella White, worked for Steven's grandfather and father as their bookkeeper for many years. They treated her like family. I worked for Steven's mother, caring for Shelley when she was just a baby. Steven's mom and dad were so kind to us and would let us enjoy their backyard pool. We extend our deepest sympathy to the family at this time of great loss. May you feel our prayers around you like a warm blanket of love.

To the Shanbon Family,

Almost 100 years have passed since our respective family histories became serendipitously entwined.

It was here in Windsor, before the Great Depression, that our grandparents first met and bartered. My maternal grandparents, Sam & Carmela La Rosa exchanged their coveted goat's milk for the offerings that your enterprising Grandfather Shanbon delivered door-to-door, as both struggled to sustain their families in this "new land" during very difficult times.

By mid-century, fate united another generation, when our fathers, Louis Shanbon and Ottorino (Nino) Ravanello transacted countless flooring contracts in the early days of Hi!Neighbor. Both were in their prime when their lives were cut short, but not before their respective drive, determination and work ethic were passed on to our generation.

Steve was the embodiment of everything your family has worked toward for generations. He proudly continued in the tradition of your ancestors, and worked tirelessly to make Hi!Neighbour an unrivalled entity in Windsor's downtown core.

Our family ties transcended nationality and religion and we were always honored to break bread together, be it Passover or Christmas. Steve's boyish smile and joie-de-vivre were always a welcome addition to our festivities. We will surely miss him, and celebrate his life and legacy.

With deepest sympathy and love,

The Ravanello Family

It saddens me to hear of Steven`s death. My husband died also @ the age of 61 with the same cancer.I would see Steven @ the cancer clinic quite often, where he would purchase my shortbread cookies.I bought a carpet from him this winter.I really experienced his knowledge of flooring and his expert salesmanship.I believe he could of sold me anything! I haven`t met many businessman with the ability to really listen as Steven could. I wish I could pay my respects in person but I am not able.
