Sylvia Lenora (Mix) Balltrip
1925 - 2018
Sylvia was born Aug. 7, 1925 in Scott City, KS in the home of a family friend. Her father, James Henry Mix, and her mother, Nellie Pearl Foster, met prior to WW1.
Throughout her early life she moved frequently as the Methodist Church sent her mother to different states. Nellie and Sylvia traveled from Kansas, to Colorado Springs, Texas and finally settled in Colorado Springs. Sylvia had 8 half-siblings. Sylvia attended school in Colorado Springs where she graduated college. She was working for the phone company as an operator when she met Roy Kenneth Balltrip. They wed in Colorado Springs, CO on December 2, 1947.
During their time together they lived in Colorado Springs, Ohio and Michigan. Eventually returning to Colorado and settling in Climax. Sylvia continued to work as a telephone operator raising their children, Kenneth Ray, Karen Elaine, Keith Lynn and Kathleen Ruth, in Leadville. Sylvia and Roy ran and managed a carpet store, Kirby Vacuum Distributorship, The Pines Trail Court as well as assisting Roy with Lake County Jail, when Roy was Sheriff. Sylvia and Roy later divorced, but continued to be friends until Roy passed away in 1998. Sylvia worked for Climax Mine as the Chief Clerk in The Mill Office. Sylvia retired from Climax in 1982. In retirement she moved to Tennessee where she bought and ran a hotel with her daughter Karen.
In 1984 Sylvia moved to Northern Colorado residing in Loveland, Evans, Greeley and Milliken before moving to the metro area.
Sylvia is preceeded in death by her half-brothers, Timothy Mix, James Mix, half-sisters, Madeline Smit, Carol Shutt, former husband, Roy, her grandson Frank Lacome, and daughter in law, JoAnn Balltrip. She is survived by her half-brothers, Ti Mix, Paul Mix, Mark Mix, half-sister, Eunice Robinson, her children, Kenneth Ray (Cathy), Karen, Keith Lynn (Crystal) and Kathleen. Her adopted daughter Anna (Sam) Hollingsworth. Her grandchildren, Sonya (Scott) Lufkin, Sammy J Hollingsworth, Kenneth Roy (Sonja), Keith Robert Isaac (Stephanie), Michael (Alisa) Loften, Malissa (Bryce) Hubble, Katie Seidel, Desirae, Tamara (Jess) Mykle, Sylvia (Kenneth J.) Hoemig, Larry Joe Lacome, Gabriel Lacome and Linda Lacome. 19 Great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Sylvia passed away, peacefully, at her home in Aurora on Friday, March 30, 2018, with Karen, Malissa and great-grand daughter, Mikayla, by her side.
A celebration of life will take place Sunday, April 22nd between 12 and 4 p.m. at the Greeley Elks Lodge,
3061 W 29th St., Greeley, CO 80631.
