Sylvia Ann Poe Nolte was born on October 17, 1936 in Kansas City, KS, and died peacefully at her home in Saint Paul, MN on February 6, 2023. She was a 1954 graduate of Central High School, Kansas City, MO. She and Maury Nolte met on a blind date on New Year's Eve, 1955, wed in 1957, and truly enjoyed each other's company for 59 years. She earned her BA in Education at KCU, where she sang in the choir and had apple pie and ice cream for lunch every day. She went on to get a doctorate from the University of Colorado in 1986. She loved teaching children and enjoyed her work as an educator and administrator in Missouri and Colorado public schools. She finished her career in the School of Education at UCCS.
She loved family road trips around the US and Canada, reading about history and politics, following the news with Judy Woodruff, watching the animals and birds in her back yard, and dinners out at Luigi's. After Maury died, Sylvia moved to Minnesota to be near her daughter and they had a nice six years together, watching the seasons turn and hoping to glimpse a bear or two in the woods.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister and brother, her husband Maury and son Kurt. She is survived by her daughter Baya, several cousins, nieces, and many good friends, neighbors, colleagues and students.
There will be an online memorial gathering for Sylvia later in February. If you would like to be included, send an email to [email protected]. Burial of ashes will take place in the spring.
Memorials preferred to PBS or your local food shelf.

When Sylvia retired from UCCS, I wrote a note to her stating that I thought in my entire career she was one of two or three best educators that I had ever known. Even after I retired early due to health issues, Sylvia and I would meet half way for lunch in Castle Rock. She and Maury came to our home for dinner and the glorious "Lessons and Carols" Christmas concert at St. John's Cathedral. She also brought Baya to our home at Christmas to see our Christmas decorations. My favorite story of Sylvia was her description of a young black bear who lumbered down to her backyard during warm and sunny fall afternoons for a nap. Sylvia was a wonderful human being. It was my great pleasure to have been her colleague and friend.
