TED BEALS Obituary

We celebrate the life and love of Ted Beals. He is survived by Gladys, his wife of 59 years, son Doug, Dubois, Wyoming, daughter Debbie Swayne, Colorado Springs, Colorado, grandchildren Jeremy, Jason, Kristen, Jessie, and Joe, and great-grandchildren, Tony and Jeslynn. He was a brother to Louise Spear, uncle to many nieces and nephews, and a devoted friend to many. He is preceded in death by, his parents, Ted and Harriet Beals, and twin sister Frances Davis. Ted was born in Colorado Springs on June 11, 1925, and died October 14, 2008 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's. He met his wife Gladys in 1948 and they married April 24, 1949. Ted began working for the city of Colorado Springs at the North Power Plant and worked there for 35 years before retirement. Ted started fixing bicycles and giving them away about 18 years ago. He felt every child should have a bike and often their parents could not afford one. Over the years, he gave away hundreds of bikes to appreciative children. Our families honor Ted's gracious nature, lively humor, tenacious spirit, inquisitive mind, encouraging wisdom, and remarkable kindness. Ted taught us how to live, how to learn, and how to love. We are proud and thankful to have had him as a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and dear friend. In keeping with Ted's wishes, there will be no services. Remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Pikes Peak Hospice.

Ted and Gladys meant so much to our family. We lived across the street from them for 50 years and they were not only wonderful neighbors, but wonderful friends as well. Ted gave so much to the neighborhood. He cared so much for children and showed his love in everything he did for them. He repaired their bikes and even gave them bikes when they couldn't afford them. He is greatly missed. But he left his legacy for all to remember. Ted, you were the greatest.

I knew Ted since I was 11 years old. Even though I was only a friend of Kristen's, he treated me like part of the family and welcomed me with open arms. He always showed an interest in my life and was one of the most loving and caring men I have ever been blessed enough to meet. The world could learn so much from a man like him.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. Ted was a man and was always kind to the kids. Damario has many memories with tony and all the bikes he always had. We will always remember his kindness.

I also grew up living across the street from the Beals family. Ted and Gladys not only had time and patience for me when I'd visit them as a child, but for my own children later on in life. My kids would beg to go to their home and spend time with them. And Ted was always ready and willing to fix their bicycles. Thank you for all the help and support you extended to my family. The old neighborhood will not be the same without the Beals, but the house will forever be your home in my memories. Ted will always be the wonderful, kind man in the suspenders to me. We will miss you.

Grandpa, you were truly my hero. I remember as a kid spending hours with you in your garage, thinking that you walked on water, and as an adult I thought that still. You had the kindest heart and soul of anyone I've ever known. I love you and will miss you always.

My dad was the best! He was thoughtful, loving and giving. He had a great sense of humor. He could fix anything that needed fixing. I will always miss those wonderful qualities. I love you Dad for all eternity. Your daughter...

Dear Gladys and Family,

I am so sorry to read about Ted - I know how wonderful he was and how good he was to Judy and Lyle all the time! I lost my husband and my Mom in January and February - believe me, it does get easier with time. Drove by Mother's old house on San Luis when I took Will's ashes to the Springs in August - looks great!
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Mr. Beals used to lived across the street from my family. Though I didn't know him, rarely a weekend went by that we didn't see a new bike (or bikes) in his driveway with a big FREE sign on them. My kids even took an old bike or 2 over to him to repair and give away.
God Bless Mr. Beals and his family.
