Memories and Condolences
for Ted von Heiland

Not sure what to say?

October 14, 2011

To Lucy Von Heiland and kids,
Please accept my condolences on the untimely death of Teddy. The news came as a total surprise since apparently no member of our class had any inkling that he was sick.
I did not know Ted when we were both in college, basically because we were in different courses. Nevertheless, I managed to get close to him when the Ateneo.yahoogroup was formed, when I started e-mailing him directly. This was the time when there were clashes of ideas and beliefs among the group which I preferred to discuss with him in private.
After several exchanges of e-mails, I remembered that I had a relative, Pacita Pamintuan, who was close to my father and other members of his family. When I asked him about her, he told me that she was his mother and tracing back (he checked with his brother and sisters too), we established that we were related (through our grandmothers who were both Sandicos and first cousins.)
Blood relationship has a way of drawing people together and he then became more open to me about how he viewed life and God. In fact he confided to me that he had grown so intense in his religious beliefs that he was afraid that he was rubbing people the wrong way and pushing them away. All this was before our reunion in Las Vegas in the spring of 2008.
I was hoping then to see him and actually prodded him to attend. He was not at the reunion and for some reason our correspondences tapered off after that. My last e-mail to him earlier this year greeting him on his birthday went unanswered as was an earlier correspondence.
I have no stories to recall to you or your family, only my regrets that Ted and I had not met again, this time around as cousins rather than mere acquaintances from school.

To the family of Ted,
This is Monchet Albert, a classmate from Ateneo College 1960, My deep condolences to you and be assured of our prayers. Ted will be included in the Memorial Mass of the class on Nov 6.
My last recollection of Ted was the time he sent an email to the group asking assistance to get his transcripts from Ateneo. I am glad I was able to help and the papers were sent directly to him.
Rest in peace now, Ted.
Monchet

Greetings from Ted's classmates in the Philippines!

Let us remember the happy times and memories that we shared with Ted. Then let us say a prayer for the repose of his soul. Let us also join his family in grieving the loss of a loved one. And finally, let us rejoice that our Ted is now in the presence of the Almighty -- with the eternal peace and happiness that he rightfully deserves.
