Terry Lee Obituary

Terry Michael Lee -->Terry Michael

Lee

August 14, 2021

Terry Michael Lee was born in Kansas City, Missouri to Harold Lee and Frankie Mary Schultz. He grew up both in the city and in the suburbs and made the most of his bicycle in exploring and riding with friends. Terry graduated from Raytown South High School, started a job, and then was drafted into the Army. He served in the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam in 1966-7 and was a Purple Heart recipient. At the time, Vietnam was not a very popular subject but Terry was always proud of his service and the military. He married in 1969 and went on to celebrate his 50th Anniversary in 2019 to Marilyn Kupersmith Lee.

Terry enjoyed owning and fixing up cars starting with a 1946 Ford and eventually he owned several Corvettes. He particularly enjoyed his participation in the Kansas City Corvette Association making many lifelong friends. Terry graduated from Central Missouri State University with a degree in History and Political Science. He read voraciously about history and particularly enjoyed local, military, presidential biographies and mysteries. Several years of hot air ballooning were enjoyed by Terry and family as they were the working crew and chase team for his parents' hot air balloon. Terry also volunteered for Kansas City Hospice for 7 years. He was the kind of gentle man that understood how important it was to have someone with you at the end. Terry enjoyed traveling, both by car and motorcycle, while exploring historical sites, National Parks, and many out of the way locations.

After moving to Colorado Springs for retirement he made a great group of friends in his neighborhood and through the Old Colorado City Historical Society.

Terry was preceded in death by his parents and his favorite cat, Mazie. He leaves behind his wife Marilyn, brother Shaun Lee of Lee's Summit, MO, sister Claudia Lee of Olathe, KS and very special friends Angel and Mark Griffith of Knoxville, TN and brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews and cousins, all of whom he was very fond. A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Old Colorado City Historical Society, Colorado Springs, CO or to Wayside Waifs of Kansas City, MO.

I met Terry in about 2017 when he was active with the Old Colorado City Historical Society and my wife Therese and I were publishing the Westside Pioneer community newspaper (2004-2019). He was always helpful, with amiable humor, whenever I saw him volunteering at the center, and gamely "submitted" to being interviewed at times for news articles I wrote about OCCHS activities.

I didn't know Terry Lee super-well, but talked to him and took his picture a bunch of times in activities by the Old Colorado City Historical Society, when I was editor of the Westside Pioneer newspaper (2004-2019). I found him to be a very nice guy and a hard-working, conscientious volunteer - willing to join his wife Marilyn to dress up "old-style" for events or to roll up his shirtsleeves and fix things, such as painting signs or helping create a better ramp into the History Center building. The photos of him that I mentioned above can still be found by doing a search for "Terry Lee" in our newspaper archives at westsidepioneer.com.
