Thomas DeCotiis Obituary

Thomas DeCotiis
February 9, 2023

Dr. Thomas DeCotiis died peacefully on February 9th, 2023, with his wife at his side. Tom was an extraordinary husband, father, friend, mentor, business leader, and scholar. After college Tom owned and operated two restaurants before starting graduate school at the University of Wisconsin and earning his PhD in organizational psychology. With a heart for teaching and learning he spent a decade in academe at Cornell University and the University of South Carolina before co-founding a management consultancy with his wife, Marta Erhard. A scholar of character and virtue, Tom authored two highly regarded books on how leaders can build and lead organizations grounded in human goodness. He was most proud of his contributions to the culture and success of startups and organizations seeking meaningful change. Over one hundred organizations, from well-known Fortune 500 brands through thriving small and medium sized businesses, glow brighter because of Tom.

In addition to his voracious study of American history, Tom delighted in the beauty of the outdoors and the world through travel, fly fishing, skiing, and his most recent passion, bird watching. Tom is survived by his wife Marta, daughter, two grandchildren, and sister, Toncha Campbell. He will be greatly missed by them and countless friends, colleagues, and extended family. The family wishes memorial contributions would be made to the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, www.publiccharters.org, honoring Tom's belief in choice and opportunity for a quality education. A private gathering honoring Tom will be held at a later date.

Just had an inspirational moment where I wanted to speak out about my uncle. Uncle Tommy was my grandmother´s little brother, my father´s uncle. He and aunt Marta always inspired me. Obviously they had successful business ventures, but what inspired me was how I was treated. I learned respect given results in respect received. My father and I have a dirty sense of humor so obviously I blame my uncle for taking part in that development!
Uncle Tommy had the capability to control a room with his energy, yet knew when silence the world around, making you feel like you were the only thing that matters. Always thinking about and missing him. Beyond grateful for my family and everything I´ve been through to make me appreciate that.
