I am not surprised but somewhat overwhelmed by the words of so many others that so precisely express my own feelings about Tom. Thank you all for sharing those thoughts. After nearly 33 years of knowing Tom, I am so grateful for his friendship, compassion, understanding, encouragement, leadership, support, etc. I cannot find enough words to describe all that he was to me. . . both professionally and personally. He made life both fun and interesting. Bob and I have so many cherished memories made with Tom and Sunny. We love them both and have treasured their friendship; they are truly great neighbors, too. Our years together with the Fire Service will always remain special. We are among a very large number who will truly miss Tom's presence in our lives. Sunny, you can be sure you are still very much a part of our lives. May God bless Sunny, Jon, Beth, the rest of the family, and all of us who called him "friend" as we learn to accept Tom's absence and continue to live our lives as Tom did. . . with gusto!
Love, Barb

We have been trying to find the words to express our feeling of loss in Tom's passing. I have known Sunny over 50 years and was just getting to know the real Tom and what a wonderful man he was. We both feel like we lost a true best friend and will miss our visits with Tom. We will continue to pray for Sunny and family and we thank the Lord for having had Tom as a friend.

Tom and Sunny were the first neighbors we met when we arrived in Ridgewood. I will miss his smile and his 'can do' attitude. Sunny, my thoughts are with you in this time of bereavement. I, unfortunately no longer live in Ridgewood as my health required me to move to a lower altitude, but my expression of sympathy and condolence is paramount in my mind to you. God Bless, Laraine

I knew him from the day I was born. He was my Uncle and also my Godfather. I grew up with stories of his younger days. I have wonderful memories of visiting them out in D.C. and of visits to Colorado. He was an awesome and awe-inspiring person. As a very young child, because he was in the military he wasn't around all the time. But when he was it was like a really special birthday treat or something. And then living so far away we never got to see as much of them as we would like. But there phone calls and emails. He will always be one of my very favoritest people in the entire world. I have friends all over the world who have been praying for all of us through this and have never met him. The best way I have found to describe him to people who hadn't met him is that he was cool. He was James Bond cool. And he still is. Because gone is not forgotten. And thank you to everyone who has been such a support to Aunt Sunny. We love you. Patty

HI All,
I got to know Tom, at first, way back in 1992.NETCVFPD was still young and we all very close and we worked hard to do a good job for the Fire District. Tom was always in a leadership role and was very dedicated to the work that was performed in Teller County. I am a better person for knowing Tom.
I pray for healing in each of your lives. I know that this good work must continue.
Thank you and God Bless,

Tom was one of the first people we met when we moved to Woodland Park. He was a big factor of us becoming involved in Fire Core. For the short time we knew Tom, he was a friend & a gentleman. He will be missed.

Sunny; Jean and I had only met Tom and you over the past several months, helping with the Community Wildfire Protection Plan, but we felt such a good welcome in your home and from you both. Reading what has been written into this book we can only express many of the same sentiments. You are warm, friendly, open people. Tom shared enthusiasm for life, friendship, and humor. We are very blessed to have known him if only for a short while. The Lord will hold him close and be over you to aid in living and remembering the things that made the life you shared so good and shape you into the future.

I feel very privileged and deeply honored to call him my Uncle. He was a wonderful man and i will cherish the memories i have of him forever. He was always there to help whenever anyone needed it. Whenever he did anything, he did it with his whole heart. I know that he is watching over Aunt Sunny and Sage now and that we will meet again soon. I love you Uncle Tom and i miss you greatly!!

I knew Tom as one of the originators of the NE Teller Fire "Support" group which eventually became Fire Corps, of which he was our president. I will miss him terribly and it will be hard to continue our meetings without him. I will keep you, Tom and Sunny, in my prayers. God bless.

I didn't know Tom for very long, just a year or so, but we worked together on the pandemic flu exercise in Woodland Park in October 2007, on the Local Emergency Planning Committee and as volunteers for the Sheriff's office. While we were on patrol we had quite a bit of time to talk and get to know each other. It was easy to see Tom was a giver and really cared about his community and I never heard him say a single negative thing about anybody. Some of our conversations were several hours long while we patrolled vacation homes for the Sheriff's Department and talked about everything from soup to nuts, we had some very good times. I will really miss Tom and I feel we have all suffered a tremendous loss but God blessed each and everyone of us by letting us spend a little time with him. Thank you Tom for the person you are and thank you Lord for sharing him with us.

What a joy to know Sunny and Tom in our neighborhood. There was just no one who knew Tom that wasn't a friend in the end. He had room for everyone, and everything. You knew that he would be there if ever you needed him, no matter who you are. But, of course, the same goes for Sunny. How lucky they were to have one another. But, as I said at the service, if we have Sunny we will always have Tom. Thanks for sharing, Sunny. So much love to you....Jean

I'm just a new neighbor to Tom and Sunny, but in the 3 years here in Ridgewood I stopped and talked to Tom when he was out walking. Enjoyed talking about the seasons and the elk calling. He really was enthuasiastic about helping our small water district and allowed a small easment so the whole neighborhood could benifit from a larger tank and system for the 56 neighbors. Thank you Tom, and Sunny of course.

I was both honored and privileged to have known Tom, he was always a gentleman. Kindhearted and willing to volunteer or lend a hand where needed. He was an asset to our community and I will miss him deeply. He touched our lives even though we've only known him for a few short years, I am glad to call him our friend.

Tom was hands-down the best supervisor I have every been privileged to work for. He possessed a collaborative leadership style that fostered open and honest communication. I always felt valued by Tom and considered him a mentor and friend. When facing tough leadership decisions I always think, "how would Tom handle this situation". He had a profound influence on me as a human resources professional and leader. I will always be indebted to him. I will miss you, Tom. You were simply the best. I look forward to that special "Aspen Walk" we will take together next time around...

God Bless you with His comfort during this time and always. I Love You,

Sam & I knew Tom as the head of Fire Corp. He seemed to be on top of things at all times and to enjoy doing so. Tom welcomed Sam and I into the Corps with open arms and job assignments making us feel welcome and needed. That is a great skill and attribute to have. Loosing him will be a loss to us personally and to the community.

I am so privileged to have had Tom for my best friend. He was a wonderful boss, a true and honest friend, and the kind of guy everyone could count on. You never knew what your potential was until he pushed you to your limit. I will cherish his memory and hope to carry on with Sunny and Sage in the things we loved to do. I know he's watching over us until we meet again.

Even though Tom was actually my ex-father-in-law, he was always a dad to me. My dad passed away 4 months ago and Tom was so sweet on Father's Day and was really concerened of how I was coping with my loss. When my dad would say he was proud of me it was great, but I knew he was somewhat obligated. When Tom would say he was proud of me I knew I had really done something good. He would always be there for me in the good and bad times no matter what. We used to pick on each other all the time. I was "blonde" and he was "old", so the jokes never stopped between us. My husband Brian even thought the world of Tom, because he was such a special man. I am so greatful to be his daughter and for having him be such a special part of my life. I love you Tom! I hope you and my dad are watching over us together!

There are a very few people like Tom, he was a man of honor and integrity, a true public servant, a friend , a mentor, a man that brought sunshine into the lives of everyone he touched. Even though we moved away from Woodland Park and out of state for more than 4 years, Tom and Sunny remain very close to us in our hearts. We visited Woodland Park Christmas 2007 visiting Kay Poland and were so gratefully surprised to be greeted by Tom and Sunny as we shared in dinner. That’s the last time we saw or spoke with Tom, we will miss him. My God bless the Kalter family.

Tom was such a good friend and a dedicated supervisor. I still talk about him when I describe what a boss should be and should do. He was confident and often said " I know enough to be dangerous" and never gave a second thought to taking me along to a meeting where my subject area would be discussed in depth. He supported me professionally and cared for me personally. I will miss him. Until I see him again.
