Thomas McCort Obituary

On Palm Sunday, March 28, 2010, Thomas L. McCort's warm and generous heart quit beating. Born April 19, 1931, Tom was raised in Akron, Ohio by his parents, Clement and Frances McCort (deceased) and with his brothers Jim (Mae - both deceased), Ray (deceased - wife Dorothy), and Paul (wife Judi) and sister, Ruth McCort of Akron, Ohio. Tom joined the United States Army. In 1952 during his first tour of Germany, he married Maria S. Mittermeier (deceased) and had one daughter, Evelyn. Together they lived in Arizona, Texas, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Alaska, finally settling in Colorado Springs after his retirement as a CW3 from the Army. Colorado Springs was home until 1995, when he reunited with Edna Mae Tennell of Hudson, Ohio. They married and made their home in Akron. With joy they together headed a family of seven: Evelyn of Colorado Springs, CO, Cherie Watson (deceased) (Craig, children Chase & Colton) of Atlanta, GA, Mary Ellen Leviton (Mark, children, Ginny & Danny) of Lilburn, GA, Susan Milner (Frank, children A.J. & Carl) of Woodstock, GA, Buddy Tennell (Jean, child, Sam) of Buford, GA, Nancy Duncan (David, children Matthew & Eric) of Paramus, NJ, and Judy Tennell of Tucker, GA. He is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends in places far and wide. Tom spent many of his retirement years volunteering for St. Thomas Hospital, where he was born and traveling with Edna. Tom faced the challenge of his many, many health issues with humor, patience and a zest for life. He will be missed by all. Visitation will be at the Billow Fairlawn Chapel, 85 North Miller Road, Akron, Ohio 44333 from 6-8 PM on Tuesday, March 30. A Mass celebrating Tom's life will be said on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at St. Sebastian's Catholic Church, 476 Mull Ave. at 11AM. Donations may be made to Respect Life, National Council of Catholic Women, 156 Corruna Ave., Fairlawn, OH 44333 or a charity of your choice. (Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 330-867-4141)

My Loving Family,
Although Tom will be missed by us here on Earth, I am glad my Dad has his presence to enjoy in Heaven.
While reading his death notice I sensed his hand at work. He was always a good teller of a tale; now we must carry the stories of his life. I have many good memories of Tom scattered throughout my life, for when Tom was there it was always a celebration! My love to you, Tom, and to your family.

Growing up as the son of Tom's brother, Ray, my and my wife's many encounters with Tom and his family have always been wonderful. He was a great human being. He is getting his life's just rewards now which he so much deserves. Rest in peace Tom and know the people you touched were better because of that contact. We will miss your presence at the family reunions held annually at our farm. The world will miss a great man!

Ruth & Family, I never knew your brother but if he was anything like you, Ruth, he was a gem. I am so very sorry to hear of his passing and I know your hearts are breaking. He is with God in a better place. Our prayers go out to all of you.
