Pastor Thomas Ballou McCray Sr. unexpectedly passed away at home on February 28, 2023, at the age of 80 years old. Pastor Thomas "Tom" Ballou McCray Sr. was born September 25, 1942, in Columbia, South Carolina to the late John H. McCray Sr. and Satis V. McCray.
At an early age, Tom and his family moved from South Carolina to Flint, Michigan where he graduated from Flint Northern High School in 1960. As a child, he enjoyed bike riding, camping, and of course telling jokes. He was an accomplished musician who "sat in" playing keyboards with artists like Sam Cooke and Jose Feliciano. In 1985 he and his wife Frances joined St. John's Baptist Church. From that point on, every note he played was to glorify Christ. He went on to become an ordained Minister in the early 90s. He was the interim Pastor of St. John's Baptist Church at the time of his passing.
Tom joined the United States Army in 1960. He retired from the military and later the United State Post Office after over 20 years of service to each. His military service included a tour of Vietnam and two tours of Panama. Tom was a veteran who wore many jackets, coats, and badges to show his patriotism. He married Frances Jane McCray (McArthur) in 1963. Frances preceded him in death on February 20, 2023. To that union, they welcomed three sons, Thomas McCray Jr. of Mesa, Arizona, Vincent McCray of Houston, Texas, and Kevin McCray who preceded him in death. He was a loving and attentive father.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents, brother Donald and sister Moesa. He leaves to cherish his memory: two sons Thomas McCray Jr. and Vincent McCray, one brother, John H. McCray Jr. of Providence, Rhode Island, and two daughter-in-laws Polly (Thomas Jr.) and Shayna (Kevin). He was a proud and caring Grandfather to four grandchildren, Thomas (Nika), LaDaisha, Tiawna, and Arianna. He was also Great-grandfather to Maliya and loved by a host of nieces and nephews, close friends, and church family.
