Captain Thomas A. Mix, USMC Ret., our beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away on June 30, 2024, at the age of 88. Born in Iowa City, Iowa, on June 2, 1936, Thomas was the son of Marvin and Lila Mix. He led a life characterized by dedication, service, and a passion for family and craftsmanship.
Thomas proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, achieving the rank of Captain before retiring with honor. He served tours in both Vietnam and Japan. His commitment to service extended to his family, where he found his greatest joy and fulfillment. He was a loving husband to Bente, with whom he shared a life that began in Denmark while he was stationed at the Embassy. They were married for 69 years. Thomas was also a devoted father to Elisa (Ib) and a cherished grandfather to Bente (Scott). He is also survived by his great grandchildren, Joseph, Brandon, Michiel, and Ryah.
Beyond his military and family life, Thomas was a renowned master model train builder and a published author in many hobby magazines. He also pursued his love for aviation, obtaining his private pilot license and flying small aircraft for pleasure.
Thomas will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His adventurous spirit and love for learning will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to share in his life's journey.
A private celebration of life and interment with military honors will be planned for a later date.
