Thomas Stewart Obituary

March 31, 1918 - July 3, 2008 Beloved husband, devoted father and grandfather and a friend to all, Thomas M. Stewart left this world at 10:53 a.m. on July 3, 2008 at his home in Liberty Heights Retirement Community. He was married for 65 years to his beloved wife, Miriam, who preceded him in death on January 12, 2006. He is survived by his son, Thomas M. (Sally), of Oak Park, Illinois, his daughter, Donna J. Sasz (Bill), of Colorado Springs, Colorado and his son, Stephen M. (Marilyn), of Colorado Springs. In addition he is survived by 9 loving grandchildren: Kimberly and Kevin Stewart (Melanie), Bryan, Stephanie and Jeffrey Sasz, Charlotte, Errin, Scott and Kari Stewart. Tom was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on March 31, 1918 to Andrew M. and Clara King Stewart and was the second youngest of 8 children. He was raised in southwest Oklahoma during the Depression and went on to graduate from the University of Oklahoma. He later earned his law degree from Georgetown University in Washington DC. He was commissioned in the US Navy and served in the South Pacific during World War II. He later rose to the rank of Captain and was Director of the Naval Reserve JAG Law Program for several years. In addition, Tom had a distinguished civilian career in the Federal Government and also served as legislative counsel to several committees of the US Congress. He moved with his family to Boulder, Colorado in 1960 where he lived for many years. After retirement he moved to Highlands Ranch, Colorado with his wife where he lived 7 years before relocating to Colorado Springs in 1999. As a proud son of Oklahoma, he lived up to the credo of his hero, Will Rogers: "I never met a man I didn't like." He fought tirelessly for those less fortunate; he was devoted to his family and friends and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. A visitation will be held on July 9 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon at Swan Law Funeral Home, 501 North Cascade Avenue, Colorado Springs. A memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church-Lehmberg Chapel, 420 North Nevada Avenue. He will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society at www.nmcrs.org.

Mr. Stewart and I had kept company for the last 3 years. I was his friend and caregiver. He has shown me what a loving father looks like and shared with me often that he thought of me as a daughter. I am deeply grateful to have shared his life even if it was for a short time. I will miss his great spirit and wonderful stories. What a gift it was to be with him and sing to him as he made his transition into his next life. As he released his final breath I sang" Dear Friend, Dear Friend Let me tell you how I feel. You have given me such blessings. I love you so." I have no doubt that he is in bliss by Mimi's side. I will think of you often Mr. Stewart, as my heart goes out to your family.
Lolomai ( I bow to the beauty within you), Elena

We had the pleasure of meeting Tom and Miriam in Fairfield, California when we lived next door to Donna and Bill in the early '70s. It was our joy to provide a spare bedroom for Tom and Miriam when the Sasz home was already filled to capacity. Throughout the years we stayed in touch and visited when possible. Thanks to Donna and Bill, we saw Tom on his last trip to Florida. He will be missed by MANY!! We send our deepest sympathy with our love,

Tom was my best friend for many years. We were roommates at Oklahoma University in 1938 and we had wonderful times getting together with our families over the years. I'll miss Tom 'til we meet again.
