Tobe Thompson Obituary

Tobe Thompson
June 18, 1936
January 14, 2023

Chaplain (LTC) Tobe W. Thompson, US Army (Ret.) was born, June 18th, 1936 in Bernice, Louisiana, to Young and Ealie (Davidson) Thompson. His most important decision came at 16, when he gave his life to Jesus Christ and never looked back. He worked in Bernice locally at Whiteside's Grocery store, moved to San Bernardino California and eventually joined the US Air Force in 1954. He served in Japan during this era and devoted his free time to working with war orphans in that ravaged country. He learned Japanese and, for the remainder of his life, with his beautiful voice, loved to sing hymns and Sunday school songs, in Japanese, with his family.
During his life of service, he was in the Air Force, Air National Guard, Army and Army Reserves. He graduated from BIOLA (Bible Institute of Los Angeles) University, with a BA in Missions and he attended Detroit Bible College, Moody Bible Institute and Denver Seminary. He was commissioned and commended as an Officer and Chaplain in the United States Army. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before he retired in January of 1996.
Tobe was always known as a Soldier's chaplain. Casting off any references to his rank, he always preferred to be called "Chaplain" by the troops. In his seminary days he enjoyed great success as a National Guard Drill Instructor, demonstrating that you didn't have to swear to lead troops and put the fear of God in them. God remained central throughout his career and he eventually served on the ground as a chaplain in combat during Operation Desert Storm. Tobe was an avid runner even earning a Bronze Medal in the Ft. Carson Iron Horse Marathon.
Chaplain Thompson was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Marvin, his sister Minnie Pearl, and Mrs. Sharon Thompson. He is survived by his son, Commander Abraham A. Thompson, US Navy (Ret.) (daughter-in-law Julie), his daughters Mrs. Faith Marquez (son-in-law GySgt Daniel Marquez, USMC (Ret.)) and Mrs. Amy Horst (son-in-law Clint), Mrs. Helen Thompson (wife of over 30 years and the mother of Abraham, Faith and Amy), sister Ruby Rona, sister Annie Hazzard, grandchildren: David, Kiara, Grace, Hannah, Reuben, Andrew, Jonathan, Bram, Carabelle, and countless nieces and nephews. He was also loving, honorary grandpa to Emma Torrez.
