Todd Martz Obituary

Todd Martz, age 42, of Highlands Ranch and Colorado Springs. Son of The Rev. Dr. Harvey and Judy Martz. Brother of Meredith (Greg) Martz Luttrell. Todd died due to complications following surgery.

Todd was the only person with Down syndrome in the US who was an initiated member of a college fraternity, the Kappa Sigmas at Colorado College, even though he was never enrolled as a college student.

Todd led a full and rich life in the community, with jobs at an Applebee's and at Wooglins Deli in Colorado Springs where he lived for many years with fraternity actives or alums and more recently with a host family. He spent time at the lodge with his fraternity brothers on the CC campus weekly.

Todd drew people to him like a magnet and showed everyone that an individual with a significant intellectual disability can lead a typical life with good supports. As one fraternity brother remarked, "Todd had Down syndrome but Down syndrome did not define Todd's life. Todd defined his own life."

Visitation Wednesday, 8/27, 4:00pm-7:30pm, Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 5303 East County Line Road, Centennial, 80122.

Memorial Service Thursday, 8/28 2:00pm, St. Andrew United Methodist Church, 9203 South University Blvd. Highlands Ranch, 80126.

For those who wish to make a memorial gift, the family requests (in lieu of flowers) that you direct your gifts to any of the following charities: National Down Syndrome Congress Foundation, 30 Mansell Ct., Suite 108, Roswell, GA 30076 www.ndsccenter.org; Kappa Sigma Fraternity, Attn: The Todd G. Judy and Harvey, I met you a long time ago when my younger daughter, Lindsay, was first diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. My husband and I attended Parents Encouraging Parents for quite some time after that. I recall meeting Todd, and, of course, I fondly remember the two of you. As a mother, it breaks my heart to know how you must be grieving for that precious son of yours, but, at the same time, knowing that he is in a far better place. Please know that all of you are in my thoughts and prayers. Lee Ann Marshall, Colorado Springs, Co

Judy, I still cherish the hand carved wooden angel that you brought back from your trip to Jerusalem and gave to me so many years ago...Over the past few days I've moved it to another location so that we may reflect on the influence that Todd, his story, and your family have had on the path we have taken with our daughter, Lindsey. Todd is such an inspiration to so many! Sending you and your loved ones peace, love and healing during this difficult time.
