Twila Smelker Obituary

Twila Gaye Smelker passed away peacefully at her home, Monday January 29, 2007. She was born January 16, 1935 to Wilma Warren Smelker and George Franklin Smelker in Statton Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Vivian Whitmarsh, Arva Campbell and brother Franklin Smelker. She is survived by sisters Verla Martinez, Una Reed, Myrna Overlease, Velma McArthur, Lola Overlease and many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Twila moved to Colorado Springs after graduating from Statton High School. She worked at Universal Electric, Ampex, Omni Pointe and Comtronics, where she gathered many life long friends. Her passion was helping others in anyway she could. She always made herself available to family and friends. She was a very strong-willed and independent person, which made her a good debator on any issue. Twila had another passion, it was the love of animals. She rescued many unwanted pets and added them to her family. "The Girls" as she lovingly referred to them, were waiting for her to join them. The family wishes to express their gratitude to her niece, Jolene Ems, for her loving vigilant care during her long illness. At her request, no services will be held. Memorials can be made to the Humane Society, Pikes Peak Hospice or charity of choice.

To all Twila's family and friends... She was in a class by herself. So independent and so kind to all. We remember her as a very special cousin. She and Verla never missed putting out Memorial Day flowers on all the family graves here at Stratton however,we always saw what she did but rarely saw them as they "had to get back to the Springs!" We will "pick up the ball" for her as she would have for any of us. She's a cousin who all will surely miss...Love always, Doyle and Christina Smelker and Family

All the years I've known Twila, she never changed and never had a harsh word about anyone. She always found good in everyone she met. I will miss her. Thoughts and prayers are with the family.
