Valerie Ellis Obituary

Fixing Shoes, and Wagon
One of the best Valerie Silver Ellis stories takes place in the early '80's when she was starting out at Cantor Fitzgerald. A senior trader asked her to take his shoes to be repaired, so Ms. Ellis had taps put on the toes and the heels extended to four inches. When the senior trader ordered the upstart young trader to redo the job, Ms. Ellis had the shoes bronzed.

"They ended up being friends," said Brian Hull, a friend and former client of Ms. Ellis. "She refused to be insulted, she refused to be intimidated. She just worked as hard as she could and she won."

Ms. Ellis, a 46-year-old equities trader, worked at Cantor Fitzergerald for 20 years, 18 of those at the World Trade Center.

"Someone said at her memorial that Val collected people," her husband, Sam Ellis, said. "She also loved to collect art. We had a place in the Hamptons and she liked the artists in the area. She loved the beach; she loved her dog Spudley. She also loved the theater and we'd often entertain clients by taking them to theater and dinner."

Mr. Hull said, "You never had to see her to know that she was in a room. You just knew her laugh. She always found a reason to laugh."

I never got to meet you but your mother took me under her wing when I was a youngster. I remember seeing your picture on the wall in an American flag frame. I believe you to be a beautiful person filled with love and that your mother showed me the same love. You are not forgotten

Remembering Valerie on the 20th anniversary of 9/11...

Carol B

January 26, 2020

Valerie was my first best friend when we were both children living on Central Avenue in Takoma Park, MD. We had so many adventures together playing in the park, setting traps for neighbor boys, waiting for the Good Humor Ice cream truck. I was very sorry to Google her name and discover she was a 9/11 victim. My condolences to her family and friends.

Tonight I went to a 9/11 Memorial service on the campus of Ohio State, where I go to school. Each attendee was given a flag with a name attached and tonight I got to learn about Valerie. I never met her, but I believe it right that I get to know about her and show support to her family and friends. I was in third grade when 9/11 happened, but I can remember quite clearly the day when everything changed. And I will not forget. My prayers to Valerie, her family & friends, and all others!

Thinking of Val today. Hard to believe that 12 years have passed. I will remember her laugh - it was infectious and full of life. She was a friend to all who she came in contact with, whether you wanted to be or not!! Val was one of a kind and is missed.

September 11, 2012

Remember the love. Remember the smile. Remember the laugh. Remember the fun. Most of all, remember her character. She was a wonderful sister, daughter, wife, aunt, friend, neighbor and coworker. We were all blessed to have her in our lives...and if you were the subject of one of her practical jokes, she was truely unforgettable!

On this tenth anniversary I once again searched the list of those who were victims of 911 having years ago heard the Val Silver was among them. Over the last 10 years I had searched the names from time to time not finding her listed by her maiden name. Today I discovered her married name and am happy to have visited this site. Her life and my life had only a brief intersection when we both attended Takoma Academy. We were both officers of the senior class there. At our 10 year high school reunion she rescued me at the last minute, delivering a sermon for me when I could not make it there. (Sorry about that) I will always remember her energy and quick smile. Our lives took different directions after our graduation and its been interesting to read stories about her life since then. My heart reaches out to the loved ones she has left.

As the 10 year anniversary approaches, I am thinking of Val and all the fun that I and my colleagues at Equinox had with her over the years. Always quick with a joke and quicker with a laugh, Val is missed by all of us. Her love of life should serve as an inspiration to everyone.

My sister Valerie loved and entertained like no other. She gave of herself generously to her family and friends, to her clients and co-workers at Cantor-Fitzgerald, and to the charities that she supported.
She committed herself 110% to everything she did.
Her quick wit was not greater than her compassion. Her business sense and accomplishments did not outweigh her kindness and generosity.
She provided warm comfort or a bawdy one liner depending on the need or the crowd.

Oh, Valerie. Hi Ho Silver! I heard your name announced during today's Memorial Service. Valerie Silver Ellis. Over the years, I had wondered about you. Googled you. But I didn't know you had married, that your last name was Ellis. This time, I ran to my computer and googled again. I found your red hair, impish smile. I found your friends, some of whom I knew, your mother. I don't remember how long we were roommates on W. 79th Street -- perhaps '79-'82 before I began spending much time in L.A. You were a wonderfully bad influence on me. Made me laugh, made me have fun, not be so serious, so cerebral. I miss you.

July 4th, 2006 - Valerie's birthday. What sort of revelry would there have been? How much laughter? It all still pains me so. All my empathy goes to Valerie's family and friends, as well as to all the others lost that day.

It has been awhile, but I remember Val from Sligo School, Pathfinders, and Takoma Academy. She was one of the "Big Kids" that always had time for us little kids. I think she learned that from her mom. My prayers go out to her family and her friends. One day we'll see her again.

As we approach the one year anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center in which Valerie passed on, I just wanted to let the family know that I still wear her name on my wrist, and my heart. I pray for the family members left behind, and will never forget. I mention her name to God every day when I get ready for my day in the morning. I hope this last year has been kind to the family, and God will show His wonderful mercy in your lives. I hope it brings you some solace to know there are ones who will never forget. God Bless

Just keep praying and trust in God. Now is a time when if anything we need to put our differences aside and try our best to stick together. This will go down in history and I personaly don't want people, years from now to think that we as a nation, reacted without reason.

I had the privilege of spending a wonderful weekend with Sam and Val. One could tell how much Val loved to open up her home, and her heart -- her humor and charm were infectious. Today is the six month anniversary of 9/11, while the city is still in mourning, we come together to remember. I believe that Val's intrepid spirit will live on forever. God Bless.

Back around 1980, a bunch of artists including myself had a musical comedy group in New York, and Valerie was part of it. She was so funny and we all loved her. I have so many great memories of Val which I will cherish always. Although we had eventually gone our own ways as good friends sometimes do, she has been in my thoughts so many times, and always has brought a smile to my face. Good bye, sweet Valerie... you are stardust now. From all of us from those wonderful days... Lou Brooks, Clare Brooks, Bill Plympton, Elwood Smith, Skip Johnson, and Mark Alan Stamaty.

Last week-end for my birthday, I visited "ground zero". Since 9/11, I have felt that I needed to go there to,in my own way, come closer to and mourn those who were lost. It was a very moving experience for me. When I returned home, my daughters and their families gave me a Mercy Band for my birthday gift. Valerie Silver Ellis is the name on my band. She will forever be in my heart and she and her family will be in my prayers always. What a wonderful person she must have been. I would love to hear from her family-if they chose to write.

Today I received a mercy band that I ordered a few weeks ago. It had the name of Valerie Silver Ellis. I read her profile and to my surprise it seemed that she had the same passions that I have. As I wear it, my heart will be with her. May she rest in peace.

What a funny story of Val bronzing the shoes! She sound like she was a very determined person with character. To say she collected friends is a reflection of her heart which must have been friendly and warm. May Val's character, her life and love live on in those who love her. We are very sorry for your loss of Val. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
