Verla Martinez Obituary

Verla J. (Smelker) Martinez passed away peacefully at her mountain home on Friday, May 24, 2013. She was born June 15, 1925 to George and Wilma (Warren) Smelker in Stratton, Colorado. She married Joe D. Martinez October 6, 1945 and was married for 49 years. Verla retired from the Ampex Corporation after 20 years. Verla is preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Joe; son, Leland D. Martinez; one brother and five sisters. Verla is survived by three daughters: Jolene (Jerry) Ems of Colorado Springs, Donna (Earl) Gross of Prunedale, California and Barbara (Dennie) Seagle of Jacksonville, Arkansas; daughter-in-law, Jesusita Martinez of Jacksonville, Arkansas; two sisters, Velma MacArthur and Lola Overlease; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter due in June, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Interim Hospice for their care and support of Verla and her daughters. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mountain Communities Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 7278, Woodland Park, Colorado 80863-0203 or a charity of your choice. A Visitation will be Wednesday, May 29, 2013 from 5-7pm with a Service on Thursday, May 30, 2013 at 2:00pm with the burial following. All will be held at Memorial Gardens Cemetery and Funeral Home.
