Vernice Dunbar Obituary

Vernice Mae Dunbar went to see her Lord and Savior on Friday, May 27, 2011. She is also known as "Mama Dunbar, or Sister Dunbar" to those in the church community. Vernice was a loving mother, a wonderful example of a solid Christian woman, and was an unwavering servant of the Lord. Vernice died of worn out parts. She was 82 years old at the time of her death. She died at her home with family present. Vernice was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on October 23, 1928. She is survived by her only living sibling, her sister, Phyllis Nolton, who still resides in Milwaukee. Vernice is also survived by her husband Dr. Rev. R.G. Dunbar (retired). She and Rev. Dunbar would have been married for 64 years this August. They traveled all over the U.S. for the first 15 years they were married and worked full-time as Evangelists. Then they came to Colorado Springs in July, 1959 and have worked and pastored here full-time until this year. Vernice has five children that also live in the Springs. In birth order they are, Susan Weixelman (husband Jim), April Dunbar, Robert Dunbar (wife Carol), Tammy Scott (husband Chris) and Vernie Mesa (husband John). Vernice also has 4 grandchildren, Robert Gerard Weixelman (wife Coty), Spencer Argueta (husband Orlando), Katie Scott, and Alexie Mesa and 2 great grandchildren, Ethan Weixelman, and Amber Argueta. Vernice's celebration service will be held at Lighthouse Temple, 111 No. 32nd Street on Wednesday, June 1 at 7:00p.m. Visitation will be on starting at 4:00 on Wednesday as well. Her son, Pastor Robert, will officiate the service Wednesday evening. The pallbearers will be her son Robert, son-in-laws, Jim Weixelman, Chris Scott, and John Mesa, her grandson Robert Gerard Weixelman and granddaughter's husband, Orlando Argueta. Join us in the celebration of her life. Mama loved yellow, so wear something bright for her. We will miss her greatly, but know that she is with the Lord and we will be reunited with her in Heaven very soon.

I am so sorry for your loss. Bro. & Sis. Dunbar married us on August 6, 1965 in Colorado Springs. I loved to hear her play the organ. I was an organist and pianist as well. I loved to hear them sing together.

May God hold you in the palm of His hand and comfort you with His everlasting love.

Sister Dunbar will be greatly missed. We are far from our home church, but the pain of the loss reaches our hearts. Dad always loved to watch her play the organ. He always said that she glowed with the Spirit. Our thoughts and prayers are with each of you! Til we meet again, God Bless. God put amazing women in our lives each & everyday to share his love and promise. I have had the greatest privilege of knowing one of these amazing women, I'm grateful for the first encounter I had with her.
I was a scared eight year old girl who arrived on a yellow school bus one Sunday morning, invited by my friend dad/mom. Not knowing who Jesus was I walked in to this large church. I was so scared of going in alone. I recall attended the Sunday school class with my friend, afterwards I recall meetings Mama Dunbar, she greeted me with open arms, and a large hug that followed. She asked me how it was and will I see you again? I remember the ride home on that yellow school bus thinking to my self well that wasn't so bad, the man in class talked about the love Jesus, then this women said she loved me. I never understood love until that day. WOW! If she loves me then Jesus can't be that bad. She had invited me to come back the following Sunday, I cam back and I came with my siblings. Mama Dunbar introduced Jesus love to a scared eight year old girl that day and to this day I'm still following him. Thank you for the love you will be missed.
My prayers are with your family.

Love, Elizabeth

My Aunt Vernice was truly a wonderful woman after God's own heart; beautiful inside & out, and touched my life with such love and kindness. She was a shining example of a life lived for the Lord. I will miss her more than words can express, but I can rejoice, knowing that she has graduated to her final reward in Heaven, and I look forward to seeing her again.
