Vilma Alexander Obituary

Colorado Springs - Vilma Dones Alexander left this world and many loved ones much too soon on Thursday, September 15, 2011. Born on August 20, 1955 in New York City, she was an adoring wife to David Alexander and a loving and devoted mother to Jared Rivera, of Cape Coral, FL and Ivan Rivera, of Wasilla, AK. She had been a military wife for most of her adult life and worked in various capacities in the Information Technology field at several military installations, of which the US Air Force Academy was the most recent. She sponsored 23 USAFA cadets over the years and, as a member of both the Hispanic Heritage and Black History Committees, she was a principal planner and organizer for both their annual heritage month celebrations. She also worked vigorously as a facilitator for USAFA Prep School cadets. In addition to her beloved husband and sons, Vilma leaves behind a step-son, David, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Also cherishing her memory are her brothers, Fernando (Fred) Dones, of Morristown, NJ and Raul Dones, of Hollywood, FL., her cousins Maria Lorenzo, of Spring Hill, FL and Richard Maestre, of Austin, TX and numerous other cousins, nieces, nephews and friends, too numerous to mention by name, but all of whom will always carry her in their hearts. Of special note is Linda Nicks, Vilma's friend and mentor, who remained supportive of her to the end. Funeral services will be conducted in Miami, FL, where she will lie in rest beside her parents, Fernando and Matilde Dones.

Vilma was so full of life and gave so much to other people. She was always worring about others and not herself. The past two years were difficult for her but now it is over. I have a lot of memories and will miss her bravery.

Vilma was so full of life. In the short time we got to know her while she and David lived at the Daniels Lofts building, she made me smile! I miss seeing them both downtown and can't imagine David's loss at this time. David, my thoughts are with you and I wish you peace in your time of grief.

Best wishes,

Vilma will truly be missed by this world. She was a very thoughful and kind person who I will never forget. I worked with her at the Air Force Academy and I remember on many occasions Vilma would make her "hot stuff" chip dip for everyone at work. She loved to make others smile. She cared about people and comforted them when they were going through tough times. I am sure Vilma is now wearing the wings that we just couldn't see while she lived on this earth. God Bless Vilma's family. I will miss her.
