Virginia Edwards Obituary

Virginia "Ginny" Lee
(Kidd) Edwards
August 15, 1941
May 5, 2022

Virginia Lee (Kidd) Edwards was born in Okla. City on Aug. 15, 1941, and passed from this earth into eternal life on May 5, 2022.

Ginny's parents were Summie Samuel Kidd and Alice Lee (Burke) Kidd. Her family lived in Ardmore and then Shawnee, OK -- where she grew up, and graduated from Shawnee High School in 1959, receiving many scholastic and extracurricular honors.

Ginny graduated from the Univ. of Oklahoma with a B.A. degree in Speech and Language Pathology in 1964 . She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, where she served as Social Chairman, and represented Kappa as Navy Queen and Yearbook Beauty Queen.

After graduating, Ginny taught in Baltimore, MD and in Austin, TX. She was also one of 24 speech pathologists chosen from around the nation to conduct the National Speech and Hearing Survey testing 40,000 children throughout the U.S. As such, Ginny was an Honorary Faculty member of Colorado State University.

Ginny accepted a teaching position in Colo. Springs in 1969, where she worked for District 11 as a Speech and Language Pathologist in numerous schools. She then became a coordinator for Special Education in Administration from 1975 – 81, as Chairman of the Speech and Language Department. While teaching for D11, Ginny also obtained a Masters Degree in Learning Disabilities from Adams State College in Alamosa.

On March 27, 1976 Ginny married Daniel Paul Edwards, a local attorney. In 1981, Ginny took a leave of absence to have a son, Austin. After raising Austin, Ginny returned to work in District 2 for 10 years as an Independent Contractor in Speech and Language. During this time, Ginny developed an innovative communication lab program for disadvantaged children.

Ginny's hobbies were gardening and reaching out to people. She was a member of the Broadmoor Garden Club, and a member of First United Methodist Church. Another hobby was traveling, and she, Dan and Austin enjoyed many wonderful trips together.

Ginny was known by all her colleagues as having an extreme compassion for working with handicapped children and adults. In both her personal and professional life, Ginny loved reaching out and helping other people, and had a special way of bringing out the best in persons whom she met, no matter where.

Ginny was beautiful, vivacious, generous and caring; she always found the good in everybody and loved people. She had a lifelong deep faith in God. God bless her memory, which her family and her many friends will always cherish.

Ginny was preceeded in death by her husband, Daniel, and her sisters, Madelyn Sue Knight and Nancy Ellen Whitten (Bill) -- and is survived by her son, Austin Edwards, and her nieces Debbie Harr (Jim) and Suzie Pendley (Hap) and their children Sarah, Christopher, and Brooke.

At Ginny's request, there will be no formal memorial service, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church or to the Pikes Peak Humane Society.

Ginny and I became instant friends in 1967 after startling each other in the halls of Dunbar in Ardmore, OK. Our first meeting was in laughter and we always had such a wonderful time together, driving to Dallas or Oklahoma City for Christmas shopping. I loved her dearly. I am so sad to learn of her passing.

Ginny, will be greatly missed. She always gave me good advice and always said the right words. I use to stop by to take her meals to her at Brookdale. And Teddy always knew it was me and I would bring him a treat. Ginny and I would talk. My prayers are with her son Austin. Luv and miss you Ginny. Till me meet again!
