Walt was born a first generation American, of Swiss decent, on September 7, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois. Walt graduated from West Chicago High School in 1958. After graduation he joined the U.S. Army, entering as a private and leaving as a sergeant, all while stationed in Germany where he served for three years. He then went on to attend the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. While attending college, Walt married his beloved wife, Evelyn (Gorman) in 1964, and in 1967 they were blessed with their first daughter, Suzanne. In 1968 Walt was hired by Hewlett Packard and the family moved to Colorado Springs. In 1973 their second daughter, Holly was born. After 34 years with H.P./Agilent Technologies, Walt retired. He then worked as a courier for FedEx Kinko's for 5 years and fully retired in 2009. Walt was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Adolph Ast, Sr. and Noelie Ast; and younger sister, Estelle Stinchcomb. Walt leaves behind his loving wife of 48 years, Evelyn Ast; daughters, Holly Ast, Suzanne Byrkit; son-in-law Jerry Byrkit; and his nieces and nephews. A celebration to honor Walt's life will be held on Saturday, May 25 at 11:00am at Swan Law Funeral Directors Chapel, 501 North Cascade Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO 80903. Evie,
I was thinking about you all just yesterday and today decided to look you up. I did not know about Walt's untimely death and am so sorry to finally hear about it. My then-husband, Vince, and I lived across the hall from you all, both of us in basement apartments and what fun we had. I remember when your daughter was born as well as when Vince and I stopped to see you when we were moving to CA. You, two, were good friends.

Walt was the best mentor this young new hire could have asked for back in the heyday of HP Manufacturing. I carry his trusting, guiding imprint with me still, as I coach another couple of new hires forward. - Jerry L

Walt's untimely death shows that we should never put things off. We had hoped to get together one of these days for lunch and to catch up. I've known Walt since Jr. High and we graduated high school together. He was a really good guy that left us much too soon.
